AND THEN I WROTE ...

...that as we measured yet another inch of drought relief one day recently, making it something close to ten inches of rain this June, we remembered the old saw in agriculture that "rain makes grain." If that is the case, we should have abundant crops of grain this year in northeast Iowa.
In fact the crops...oats, corn and soybeans...do look great, except for those low spots where there is standing water. And I noticed on a recent drive in the county that there were a lot of low, wet spots.
It was raining again this morning, still in late June, as I sat at the computer.

LOCAL AG INSTRUCTOR ATTENDS STATE CONFERENCE

Nate Gebel, of the Allamakee Community School District, attended the Iowa Agricultural Education Conference in Ames, June19-22. Agricultural educators from high school and post-secondary schools converged on Ames for four days of professional development. The conference theme was "Preparing For the New Millennium."
To assist in meeting mission and goals, the conference was designed to enhance teacher in-service opportunities by involving Iowa State University and agribusinesses in Ames and Story County.

Couple to celebrate anniversary

A 50th anniversary open house will be held Saturday, July 15 from 2-6p.m. for Paul and Carol Quandahl at their home at 1402 Oneota Drive, Decorah, Iowa. Cards and greetings are welcome, but no gifts requested. The open house will be hosted by their children; Quentin and Mary Quandahl, Kevin and Kris Quandahl, Tracy Quandahl, Sharon, Mark, Camron, Clark and Joy Quandahl and Tony and Jan Quandahl.

September 2 wedding is announced

David and Jeannine Zimmerman of Waukon wish to announce the engagement of their daughter, Kristina, to Benjamin Gralund, son of Chris and Jenette Gralund of Ely, IA.
Kristina is a 1995 graduate of Waukon Senior High and a 1999 graduate of Coe College in Cedar Rapids with majors in Sociology and Speech Communication. She is currently employed in Extraordinary Markets at AEGON in Cedar Rapids.

WANDA'S WORLD

As I prepare to write yet another very entertaining column (or so I like to think), I see on the television quite a bit of coverage of a special event.
Today is the birthday of the future King of England; Prince William is turning 18. Today is also my son's birthday - he's 19 and just thinks he's a Prince.
Since my son is a year older than William, I like to think my family set the standard for the Royal Family to follow. We're not so different you know, not really.

JUNE'S EXCESSIVE RAINS COME AT A PRICE
