THE VIEW FROM HERE

With Father's Day now less than a week away, a couple of days in fact, I find myself racking my brain for the perfect gift idea for my husband, the father of our two children. Of course, the gift would be one from our daughters to their dad, and naturally, my first inclination is to try to think of something we might buy for him. Only three minor problems...
First of all, I'm a procrastinator and have, once again, run myself nearly out of time to go exploring for that “perfect gift.” And God knows, it would take time, which leads me to difficulty #2.

AND THEN I WROTE

...that the national media made quite a story about the fact that the top three finishers in the national spelling bee were all home-schooled. That tradition goes back to 1997, when the winner also was taught at home. And this year’s winner in spelling also was a second place finisher in the earlier geography bee, and four of the top ten in that contest were home-schooled.
This is not going to be a column in favor of home schooling, but rather one in favor of schooling at home. There can be a difference.

WANDA'S WORLD

Modern day survival kit

A few weeks ago I made fun of my husband's yearly ritual of cleaning out the garage. This week I confess to my own yearly ritual - cleaning out my purse. Personally, I think my husband has the easier job!

SNACK HEALTHY TIPS ON FUN FRUITS AND VEGGIES

Getting kids to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day doesn’t seem to be asking too much. But for thousands of Iowans who’ve stared down cooked spinach ‘til they’re blue in the face,’ it may seem an elusive dietary goal.
Fortunately, today’s fruits and vegetables have been repositioned as tasty, nutritious “convenience foods” that are perfect for kids on the go. Experts say most Iowa children will need to nearly double their daily consumption of fruits and vegetables to reach the five servings a day recommended by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines.
