HUGH SWEENEY

Hugh Sweeney, 68, of Cedar Rapids, died early June 15, in his home after a long battle with cancer. The funeral service was June 17 at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids and was officiated by Father Karl Glovik. Burial was at Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

ELLEN GODFREY

Ellen “Nellie” Godfrey, 93, of Minneapolis, MN, died June 16 at North Memorial Hospital in Rosedale, MN. The funeral service is June 21 at Hanson Funeral Home with Father Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial will take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Waukon.

VERNON HAMMEL

Vernon C. Hammel, 83, died June 12 at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon. Funeral service was held June 15 at St. Patrick’s Church, Waukon, under the direction of Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg. Burial took place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.
Vernon Hammel was born December 8, 1916, in La Crosse WI, to Charles and Mae (LaTronch) Hammel. On September 9, 1946, he married Dorothy Buwa at St. Mary’s, Lycurgus. He and his wife lived in Lansing and Waukon at different times during their marriage.

LEORA MUNDT

Funeral services for Leora Mundt were held June 14 in the Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia. The Reverend Dave Length officiated. Marlys Hager was the organist. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia.
Leora Belle Bloxham Mundt, the daughter of Lee Sumner Bloxham and Sadie Belle (Kelly) Bloxham, was born October 1, 1920, in Franklin Township, near Luana. She passed away June 10, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. She had reached the age of 79 years.

Monday evening’s Waukon City Council meeting was brief, yet took care of scheduled business.
Councilman Duane DeWalle acted as mayor-protem in the absence of Mayor Jones.

NUMEROUS STAFF CHANGES AND MAINTENANCE ISSUES UNDER DISCUSSION BY SCHOOL BOARD

The June 19 meeting of the Allmakee Community School District focused on staff salary concerns, equipment and operational details and staff hirings or alterations within the District.
Addressing the Board concerning their salaries at the meeting were Mary O’Neill, Waterville Elementary secretary, and Rita Irons, East Elementary library associate.
The women informed the Board they did not receive pay scale raises during the contract renewal procedures for the 2000/2001 academic year.

CITY WATER SUPERINTENDENT TO LEAVE POSITION UPON 20 YEARS OF SERVICE

Waukon’s Water and Sewer Superintendent, Butch Kessel, will retire June 30 after thirty years of service to the City.
He came to work for the City on May 15, 1970, after working as a carpenter with Dale Robey and Bob Stilwell. “I enjoyed the carpentry business, and I still enjoy woodworking,” he said. “But it was seasonal work and I would be laid off in the winter. I was looking for a year-round job.”

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ariel Nicole Dennler was born June 7 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. At birth, the infant weighed seven pounds. Ariel’s parents are Nicole and Kurt Dennler, Waukon.
Her grandparents are Dean and Sherry Bechtel of Waukon and Robert and Jane Dennler of Elkader. Great-grandparents are Neve Bechtel of Waukon and Virginia Halverson of Waukon.
Ariel is the Dennler’s first child.

SOFTBALL INDIANS DOWN NEW HAMPTON, WIN TWO OF THREE TO PLACE THIRD AT DUBUQUE TOURNAMENT; WIN STREAK HALTED AT 11 GAMES

The Waukon Indian softball team compiled a mark of 3-1 in competition this week, suffering its first loss in its last 12 games and just its second loss of the year to improve to 13-2 overall, 4-0 against Northeast Iowa Conference opponents. The Tribe added its fourth NEIC win of the season Friday, June 16 with a 10-0 handling of New Hampton on the road and then won two of three games to finish third at the Dubuque Tournament Saturday, June 17.

INDIAN BASEBALL TEAM FALLS TO DECORAH AND AT NEW HAMPTON; RAIN CLAIMS TWO MORE GAMES

Mother Nature and conflicting schedules turned an extremely busy week for the Waukon Indian baseball team into one much more manageable, with a slate of five consecutive games being dwindled to just two because of rainy weather. Those two games both wound up in the loss column for the Tribe, however, as the Indians dropped a 3-0 decision to Decorah at home Monday, June 12 and a 4-2 final at New Hampton Friday, June 16.
