Several Allamakee County residents were among over 18,000 Catholics representing 211 parishes of the archdiocese of Dubuque to gather in the UNI dome, Cedar Falls, in celebration of the current Jubilee Year Feast of Pentecost.

TWO RECEIVE PIONEER DAIRYMAN AWARD

Karlton Eberling, of Postville, has been a dairy farmer for the past 50 years, having started in 1950.

>He and his son Kevin have a rolling herd average of 23,022 pounds of milk, 797 pounds of protein and 922 pounds of fat with their Brown Swiss herd.

Karlton is a past 4-H leader of 18 years, church council member, Allamakee Extension Council, Farm Service Board, Frankville Cheese Board, Dairy Promotion Board, Township Trustee, Farm Bureau, 'Tri-State Director and Vice President of Big-4 Coop.

THREE RECEIVE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO DAIRY INDUSTRY AWARDS

Cletus Sommer is a native of Waukon, married to Sandy, has two children, and one grandchild. He graduated in 1962 from Waukon High School. He hauled cattle for his dad, Charles, until 1968 when he bought his brother Jerry's Milk route. Routes included farms around Waukon, Waterville, Harpers Ferry, Lansing, Postville, Castalia, Decorah and Dorchester. He had 45 patrons and had 2 straight trucks with the capacity of 18,000 pounds of milk and shipping out 40,000 pounds each day.

DISTINGUISHED DAIRY FAMILY AWARD

Named Allamakee County Distinguished Dairy Family was Leo, Kathy, Greg and Jenny Conway of Lansing.

Leo has been involved in farming since childhood and remains on the home place today with his family. His son, Greg, and his wife, Jenny, live nearby and are a big part of the entire dairy operation.

They farm 580 acres and milk 148 head of Holsteins. Their current herd average is 22,904 pounds of milk, 936 pounds of fat and 749 pounds of protein.
