Olga Wendel

Funeral services for Olga Wendel were held Saturday, January 29, 2005, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. Rev. Allen Hermeier officiated and was assisted by Greg Hamm. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.
Olga Signora (Storla) Wendel was born July 13, 1903, in Paint Creek Township, Allamakee County, near Waterville, Iowa, to Ole O. Storla and Julia (Paulson) Storla. She passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2005, in the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon.

Louis Moe

Louis A. Moe, 69, Big Lake, Alaska, died Saturday, January 8, 2005, after a short stay in the Providence Hospital in Anchorage and a battle with emphysema.
Louis Atkin Moe was born June 14, 1935, in Allamakee County, Iowa, in a farm house near Lansing to Hans Jacob and Mame Moe. He attended school in Waterville and graduated from Waterville High School in 1953.

Marjorie Blake

Marjorie A. Blake, 81, of Waukon, Iowa, formerly of Denver, Iowa, died Thursday, January 27, 2005, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Monday, January 31 at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church, rural Waukon, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial was in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Denver. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Cases heard in district court

Solis-
Leonardo Solis, 22, Postville, pleaded guilty to driving while revoked the night of Dec. 4, 2004.
According to the report, at about 8 p.m. that night, a Postville police officer stopped Solis' van for an equipment violation. Dispatch informed the officer that Solis' license had been revoked due to a prior charge of operating while intoxicated. There were also warrants out for his arrest in both Allamakee and Chickasaw counties. Solis was arrested and transported to the Allamakee County jail.
Solis was found guilty and fined $1,000.

Ruth Kallevang

Ruth Emma Amelia Kallevang, 93, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at the Howard County Hospital. Services were held Saturday, January 29 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco.
Ruth was born July 23, 1911, in the rural Ossian area to Henry and Rose (Meyer) Mundt. She attended the Centennial School near Castalia, Iowa.
Ruth married James Kallevang on May 5, 1938, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. James and Ruth farmed for 39 years in the Decorah and Cresco areas, retiring in 1977. They then moved to Cresco.

Caution! Guardian Llamas on duty

In the long grass a coyote lurks, eyeing the newborn lambs. Suddenly, the sheep's guardian lets out a warning cry and charges the coyote. The guardian chases the predator out of the pasture before it can harm any of the wooly flock. Another job well-done by (duh-duh-duh-duaaaah) Guardian Llama!

4-State Dairy Management Seminar

Dairy producers in the tri-state area have the opportunity to learn about milking frequency, cross-breeding, feeding straw, and pasteurizing calf milk from Extension Dairy Specialists at the 4-State Dairy Management Seminar on February 22 at the Dairy Center in Calmar, IA.
University Extension Services in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin will again combine to host this annual Management Seminar in each state starting in February 2005.
