Community "Tasting Fair" this Saturday in Lansing

GROWN Locally, a cooperative of fourteen farmers in the local area, is inviting the community to a Tasting Fair at the Kerndt Brothers Bank Community Room, 391 Main Street in Lansing, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 5. At the Tasting Fair, community members will be able to taste many of the products raised by these local growers, including vegetables, apples, berries, baked goods, chicken, turkey, pork, beef, eggs and honey.

Allamakee County Board of Supervisors meeting Monday, Jan. 31

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met Monday, Jan. 31 in regular session and moved quickly through several items on the agenda before advancing to budget reviews.
Allamakee County Recorder Deb Winke was present to discuss with the Board compensation for Laurie Welch, who is in charge of data processing and HIPAA security in the county office. Welch has taken on these responsibilities in addition to being Winke's first deputy in the recorder's office.

Registration for Kindergarten and Bright Beginnings to take place at West and Waterville February 15 and 16

Kindergarten registration for the 2005-2006 school year in the Allamakee Community School District's West and Waterville Elementary centers will be held as follows:
Tuesday, Feb. 15 - West Elementary, Waukon
Wednesday, Feb. 16 - Waterville Elementary.
As part of the registration procedure, the pre-school children and their parents will receive a letter inviting them to visit and participate in activities in the kindergarten classrooms. Vision screenings and parental information sessions are also scheduled.

Applications are available for NEICAC Scholarships for low-income students

The Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation (NEICAC) has announced that NEICAC Scholarships are available that are supported solely by employees and friends of Community Action. The application and criteria for eligibility are available through the Family Service Office in Waukon (563-568-4224) or the Administrative Office in Decorah (563-382-8436, Ext. 118) or at high school guidance counselor's office. Applications need to be returned by 4:30 p.m. April 1 of this year to be considered.

On Winona State Dean's List

A pair of former Waukon Senior High School students have been named to the Dean's List for the 2004 Fall Semester at Winona State University (WSU) in Winona, MN.
Shawn Cunningham of Waukon and Angeline Gibbs of Waterville were among the WSU students meeting the school's Dean's List requirements of being enrolled full time for at least 12 graded credit hours and achieving a minimum grade point average of 3.50 for the fall term.

East Elementary School releases Honor Rolls for First Semester

East Elementary School has released the honor roll for the first semester of the 2004-2005 school year. "A" Honor Roll students must achieve a 3.8 grade point average or higher on a 4.0 scale. "B" Honor Roll students must achieve between 3.0 and 3.79.
If a student has made the "E" Honor Roll, or Exceptional Effort Honor Roll, the student increased by one full letter grade in one academic course without dropping in any other academic course between the first and second quarter.

Pair of calls for Waukon Fire Dept.

The Waukon Fire Department was called out on two occasions this past week. The first call came early Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 26 to 934 Old Stage Road, where a car being worked on had caught fire and was extinguished by the Waukon crew.
The second call came Saturday evening, Jan. 29 to 308 Ninth Street SW. A carbon monoxide detector alerted the residents to a possible problem, but upon arrival the Waukon volunteers found no signs of carbon monoxide within the residence.
