"Walking School Bus" will begin Friday in Waukon

The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) "Walking School Bus" will have its official start this Friday, April 12 for elementary-age students in the district. Three "Walking School Bus" routes, one to each elementary school in Waukon, will depart from the playing field a block north of East Elementary School near the ACSD bus barn along Fifth Street NW this Friday morning.

Allamakee Dollars for Scholars Breakfast is Friday

Allamakee Dollars for Scholars will hold a Recognition Breakfast this Friday, April 5 at 7:30 a.m. in the Waukon High School Cafeteria. The breakfast is being held to thank individual and group donors and to introduce student applicants.
Applicants and their parents will be special guests. Pledges from the recent phone-a-thon can be turned in at that time also. Reservations are not necessary for the breakfast, but would be appreciated. Reservations may be made with Amy Wasson at Waukon High School, 563-568-3466.

Dr. Michael Bechtel honored with WWST Excellence in Science Education Award

Dr. Michael Bechtel, Ed. D., a science teacher at La Crosse Central High School, was recently recognized by the Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers (WSST) for his outstanding work with Science Education in Wisconsin.  WSST recognizes science teachers annually for their achievements.

WHS FBLA Chapter places third at State Conference

The Waukon High School (WHS) Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter traveled to Coralville to compete in the 2013 FBLA State Leadership Conference Thursday-Saturday, March 21-23. Members of the WHS Chapter competed against students from other schools in the state of Iowa in a variety of business-related tests, skills, presentations and speaking event competitions during the Conference, helping the Chapter to an overall third-place finish.

Waukon Junior High and West Elementary students team up to help break a national reading record

Students at Waukon Junior High and West Elementary Schools engaged in a valuable reading experience that played a role in setting a new national record for the “Read The Most From Coast To Coast” reading event March 1. West Elementary students and teachers walked over to the Waukon Junior/Senior High Library that day to pair up with a seventh or eighth grade student. Students enjoyed reading books together and using the junior high netbook computers to read online and do activities geared toward eBooks.

Allamakee Community School District ranks second currently in 2013 Live Healthy Iowa Kids K-12 Cup Challenge

The Live Healthy Iowa Kids K-12 Cup Challenge was created this year to help build a culture of wellness in schools across Iowa. Schools who wanted to participate in this challenge contacted Live Healthy Iowa and had at least one student team and one staff team participating in the 10 Week Wellness Challenges offered by Live Healthy Iowa and Live Healthy Iowa Kids.

WHS Chapter of National Honor Society inducts new members for 2013

Three seniors and 18 juniors at Waukon High School were inducted into the local chapter of the National Honor Society at the chapter's annual induction ceremony held Tuesday, March 12 at Waukon High School, joining the 22 seniors inducted last year as juniors.
