Waukon Junior High School to host summer school session August 5-9

Waukon Junior High will be holding its second summer school session Monday, August 5 through Friday, August 9 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Waukon Junior High students will be offered the opportunity to work with their new laptop computers, as well as participate in some recreational activities. Students will also spend time working on the A+ Learning System, getting exposure to some of next year’s classes at the Junior High.

Keystone AEA will be offering Substitute Authorization Class

Keystone Area Education Agency (AEA) will be offering the required training course for the Iowa Substitute Authorization. This authorization allows an individual to substitute in a middle school, junior high school or high school. For anyone who is a Certified Paraeducator, this assigned special education classroom may be at the elementary, middle school, junior high school or high school level.

St. Patrick School Registration Aug. 6

St. Patrick School in Waukon will have registration for new and returning students for the 2013-2014 school year Tuesday, August 6 from 1-6 p.m. All students must register at this time, including those students who may have pre-registered.
Anyone who cannot be present for registration is asked to contact the principal's office at 563-568-2415 to set up an alternative registration time. Children who are not Catholic or who are members of another parish are welcome to enroll at St. Patrick School.

Brother Leo V. Ryan, C.S.V awarded Honorary Degree by DePaul University

June 16, DePaul University in Chicago, IL bestowed an honorary degree upon one of its most accomplished educators at its Spring Commencement. Waukon native Brother Leo V. Ryan, C.S.V. was one of three honorees to be awarded such a degree from DePaul's College of Business during observance of its Centennial this year.

ACSD Walking School Bus finally able to walk

The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Walking School Bus was finally able to operate for the first and only time this school year Friday, May 31st. It was scheduled to run two other times this spring, but was called off both times due to poor weather.

Effigy Mounds National Monument getting set to host 2013 Summer Programs for all to take part in

Summer is a busy time of year at Effigy Mounds National Monument. The visitor center is now open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with an introductory movie, museum and bookstore within. Trails are always open from sunrise to dusk. Ranger-guided hikes, walks, or talks will be offered twice each day beginning Sunday, June 16 through Labor Day, September 2, departing from the visitor center at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

West Elementary awarded $1,000 from Live Healthy Iowa Kids

West Elementary School in Waukon was randomly selected to win a cash prize for participating and completing the 10 Week Wellness Challenge sponsored by the Live Healthy Iowa program. A $1,000 check was presented to the school Friday, May 17 by Lisa Weber, coordinator of Live Healthy Iowa Kids. During the 10 Week Wellness Challenge, Iowa’s youth tracked their physical activity minutes throughout the entire 10 weeks and also tracked five nutrition components during two-week time periods.
