World Day of Prayer at St. Paul

Postville’s 2005 World Day of Prayer service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church on March 4, 2005 beginning with coffee at 9:30, followed by a program at 10. Women from Community Presbyterian Church and St. Bridget Catholic Church will also be participating.

Betty Douglass

Age 84, passed away on February 15, 2005, after a long illness. She was born on December 28, 1920, in Postville, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Ruth Douglass. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C. and later graduated from Antioch College, Yellow Spring, Ohio. She completed her graduate work at American University in Washington, D.C. and Stanford University, Stanford, California. She married Jay Jansen of Amsterdam on February 7 and resided in Claremont, CA. After her first husband passed away, she married John LeClair in Santa Barbara, CA.

Esther Schutte

Funeral services for Esther Schutte were held Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend Allen Hermeier officiated. Special music was provided by Kim Schutte, soloist and Joann Martins, organist. Casket Bearers were the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Zimmerman named to Dean's List at Clark

Clarke College of Dubuque, Iowa, has announced their Fall 2004 dean’s list which recognizes students who have earned a 3.65 grade point average or above, on a 4.0 scale, with a minimum of 12 graded hours.

Chris Zimmerman, son of Douglas and Janet Zimmerman of Postville, is listed on the Fall 2004 semester dean’s list.

Dibble is scholarship winner

The Winneshiek County Corn/Soybean Assn. held its annual banquet Feb 12th at Nob Hill Supper Club. Two scholarships were awarded at the banquet. Pictured left to right are award winners, Angie Dibble, a senior at Postville High School, who received a $500.00 scholarship donated by Moe Russell form Russell Consulting, Bob Hemesath (president of Winneshiek County Corn/Soybean Assn.), Mitch Hemesath who received a $500.00 scholarship from Winn County Corn/Soybean Assn.)

Grand Meadow 4-H answers "Who is Your Valentine" roll call

Grand Meadow 4-H club met on February 6 at the Citizens Center at 7:30. There were eight people present. The meeting was called to order by Kaylee Zuercher. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Carol Steva, and the roll call was “Who is your Valentine?” The secretary’s report and treasurer’s report were given by Christa Miner.

Old business on the agenda was the bill for bowling at Highway Lanes after the potluck for members and family.

New business discussed included:

•to collect dues of $5 for each member;

An Open House noon luncheon to celebrate the 80th birthday of Orlan Landsgard will be held Sunday, March 6, 2005, at Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder. They will be serving between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Your presence is your gift.

•Melissa Mohs and Mel Lenth, both employees of IL Norplex will walk 60 miles in the Avon Breast Cancer 3-day walk to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.

•Jeff Bohr, Postville EMT,was awarded a Postville Volunteer from the Heart Award. Bohr was nominated by Bob Reierson.

•The month of March surely came in as a lamb. The high temperature on March 1 was 58 and on March 5th the temperature topped out at 64 degrees.

•Ten Years ago

•Kara Schultz of Postville has been awarded a Norwest Bank Scholarship.

Bob's Creek Club hosts family and friends potuck

The Bob’s Creek Neighbors Club met Feb. 13 at the Postville State Bank basement for their Family and Friends potluck dinner.

A short meeting was held by the members. Plans were made for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the club. The club members also marked their calendars for March 18 when they are to meet at the Good Samaritan Center by 2 p.m.

March 16 the members are to meet at the Lutheran Church parking lot by 10:45 a.m. Members are to call one of the committee members by March 12 whether or not attending.

Franklin Homemakers have program on antiques

The February meeting of the Franklin Homemakers met in the home of Sharon White. Co-hostess was Gwen Brainard.

The January card party was cancelled due to ice and snow.

The meeting started with the Thought for the Day by Sharon White. Roll call was a joke. On February 25 members will serve at Postville Good Samaritan Center.

The program was presented by Joanne Gelo. She spoke about her antique shop and collecting antiques. She gave a quiz and prizes.

The next meeting will be held March 14 at the home of Mary Schroeder in Luana.
