Chili Band-O-Rama is March 17

The annual Postville Chili-Band-O-Rama event will be held on Thursday, March 17 (Happy St. Patrick’s Day!) Residents are urged to make plans now to attend this event and enjoy delicious food, concert band music and the joy of supporting Postville Community School District’s young instrumentalists.

Supper will be served in the Cora B. Darling building all-purpose room from 5-7 p.m. for $3.50 with preschool children being free.

Big 4 Poststar 4-H meets at the library

The regular meeting of the Big 4 Poststar 4-H Club was held on Feb. 14, 2005 at the Postville Public Library. The meeting was called to order by Vice President, Darren Kraus, at 7:30 p.m. There were 9 members and 13 guests present. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Stacy Berns.

Roll call was name a goal in 4-H you have for 2005. The secretary’s report was read by Darren Kraus and approved. The treasurer’s report was given by Nancy.

Nancy reminded everyone that they are to pay their club dues.

All-State Speech

All-State Speech honors

Aaron Kruse, Aaron Schutte and Matt Moore received all-state speech honors for their group improv presentation during large group speech contest. Betsy Shea is the speech coach at Postville High School. All Postville High School students who participated at the state level received I ratings.

Many area colleges offer matching funds to Dollars for Scholars recipients

The Postville Dollars for Scholars organization conducted their yearly phon-a-thon this past week. All funds raised will be used for scholarships for the Postville High School Class of 2005. All funds for local scholarships are raised locally and include, along with the phone-a-thon, the pancake breakfast, memorials and donations.

Chamber hosts drug seminar

The Postville Chamber of Commerce, along with the Northeast Iowa Meth Task Force, hosted a “Meth in our Community” seminar Thursday evening which was an educational opportunity for the approximately 150 people who attended. Those attending walked away knowing the hazards of meth and drug use and its affect on family, friends and the community. Among the presenters were Jeremy Strub, Allamakee Co. Substance Abuse Coordinator; Clark Mellick, Sherriff’s deputy; Postville police officers and Sherryl Paul, NE Iowa Correctional services.

At the Council meeting..... Budget accepted, property purchased, bids received for PCSC

The regular meeting of the Postville City Council Monday evening saw no members of the public stepping forward to express concerns during the open forum portion of the meeting.

Dave Schechinger, of Veenstra and Kimm Engineering addressed the renovation of the softball complex and the construction of a small access road which will be used mainly for travel to and from the Postville Farmers Cooperative.

ZIEMAN WILL CHAIR STATE HEALTH BOARD

Bev Zieman of Postville has recently been elected chairperson of the state Mental Health, Mental Retardation, Developmentally Disabled and Brain Injury State Commission commencing. Zieman served as vice chair of the commission the past two years and she currently replaces Steve Reuter, County Supervisor of Bremer County.
Zieman has served on the Northwest Iowa Mental Health Commission (serves 31 counties) and on the Work Activity Board in Cherokee. She is currently serving on the TASC, Inc. Board of Directors in Waukon.
