Postville Vet Clinic “rises from the ashes” to open new facility in the business park

by Wanda Simmons

"Rising from the ashes." This phrase surely tells the story of the remarkable resurgence of the Postville Vet Clinic following a devastating early-morning fire on March 22, 2004, which destroyed this long-time business in downtown Postville.

The Postville Vet Clinic has rebuilt bigger and better than ever and is the first business to locate in the newly established Postville Business Park just east of this small community on Highway 18/52.

Postville ousted by Elkader in double overtime thriller

POSTVILLE OUSTED BY ELKADER CENTRAL IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

By Gary Simmons, Sr.

ELKADER - This was expected be one of the premier district playoff contests in the area and it lived up to its billing.

Central held the hot hand as it hit six 3-pointers throughout the contest Monday to unseat Postville, 52-51, at Central Elkader High School.

“We had a good season. I couldn't be prouder of these kids,” Postville coach Mike Sass said. “They (Central) hit the big shots when necessary, and we had some untimely turnovers. But our guys never gave up.”

Highlights from the senate

Tension is building in the legislature as we near the first funnel date on March 11. To remain viable for debate on the floor, bills must have passed through the committee process by this date. There are exceptions: bills passed from the House, leadership bills, and any bills in the Ways & Means and Appropriations Committees.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

Increasing Iowa’s cigarette tax by $1 per pack with 10 cents of the increase going to reduce tobacco use is a WIN, WIN, WIN solution for Iowa!

WIN #1: Fewer kids smoking. Every state that has significantly increased its tobacco tax has seen a reduction in youth smoking. An increase of $1 per pack in Iowa’s cigarette tax would reduce youth smoking by 19.5%.

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor:

In the past several weeks our son has given up his Sunday afternoons to help referee basketball games for 5th and 6th grade area youth. During the weekend of February 19th and 20th he and other members of the Postville girls and boys basketball teams gave up their weekend to assist at a tournament sponsored by the Postville Booster Club. These young people volunteered their time. They received no compensation but did receive plenty of abuse.
