Huinker has hole-in-one

Bill Huinker, of Postville, hit a hole-in-one at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Clermont on Thursday, July 9, during their Men's Senior Tournament. Huinker hit the hole-in-one on the par three Hole #4 using his three-iron. He won the pin event for the day of the tournament. This is Huinker's second hole-in-one. His first one, he hit five years ago when visiting family in California.

Girls lose in third round

Vs. Kee High

On Wednesday, July 8, the Lady Pirates started off their tournament season playing Kee High in Postville. The girls came out victorious in the first round of Regional play.

They won by a score of 9-4 with 10 hits and 2 errors. Jenna Brincks pitched 4 strikeouts and 2 walks. The top hitters for the Lady Pirates were Tina Converse: 2 hits, 1 double, 1 RBI; Abby Eberling: 1 hit, 1 RBI; DayLee Mostaert: 2 hits; Whitney Deering: 1 triple, 1 RBI; Kelsey Heins: 1 double; Jenna Brincks: 1 hit; and Tasha Klinger: 3 hits, 2 homeruns, 6 RBI's.

Boys struggle in final conference game

Vs. South Winn

On Monday, July 6, the Pirates hosted the South Winn Warriors in their final home game of the season.

In game one, things did not go well for the Pirates. South Winn hit the ball very well and managed to get numerous runners into scoring position. In addition, Postville did not do their best at fielding the ball, and committed six errors. At the plate, things just got worse as Warrior pitcher Zac Soukup was on a roll. No Pirate was able to get a hit.

At the end of five innings the game was stopped with the Warriors on top 18-0.

Family Favorites from Fran

Well, summer has hit us so when I am thinking about cooking, I am thinking about something light and easy. Garden vegetables are ready so I like to use whatever I can out of the garden.

Stacked cornbread and turkey salad

One box package of cornbread mix (8 ounces)

One bottle peppercorn dressing (16 ounces)

One half cup mayonnaise

One fourth cup buttermilk

One package romaine lettuce shredded

Two and one half cups chopped smoked turkey (about 3/4 pound)

Senior Citizens hold potluck

The June 24 meeting of Postville Senior Citizens was attended by 11 members. Darlene Nuehring was hostess. Following the noon potluck, Lillian Jahnke presided over the business meeting. Patty Scholtes of Northland Area Agency on Agent was present to hand out farmers market tickets.

Hostess for the July 22 meeting will be Laura Duvel. All senior citizens are invited to attend the monthly get-togethers at Community Presbyterian church.

Birth of Gavin Knutson announced

Justin and Tasha Knutson of Decorah are pleased to announce the April 27, 2009 birth of their son, Gavin Kenneth Knutson at Mayo Hospitals in Rochester, Minn. Gavin weighed 4 pounds, 10 oz at his birth and was 17 1/4 inches long.

His grandparents are Drew and Annette Deering of Postville, Diane Knutson of Decorah and the late Dennis Knutson.

Rowland attends convention in Tenn.

Lee Rowland, son of James and Elvira Rowland of Postville and grandson of LaVilla Onsager also of Postville, attended the National convention in Nashville, Tenn. for certification of strength coach specialist (CSCS).

For two years Rowland was an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He is currently in his third year at James Madison University in Harrisburg, Va. where he serves as a special assistant coach.

Lee, a graduate of Postville High School, received his degree in sports science at Iowa State University.
