Family Favorites from Fran

You wouldn't think kids would like spinach or artichokes, but my grandkids like the dip below:

Baked Spinach and

Artichoke Dip

Two six ounces packages of fresh baby spinach

One tablespoon butter

One eight ounce package (1/3 less fat) cream cheese

One garlic clove, chopped

One 14 ounce can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped

One half cup light sour cream

One half cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese, divided

Allamakee Community Players holding auditions

The Allamakee Community Players will be holding auditions for their fall comedy on Thursday, August 6th, 2009 at 7:00 PM in the fellowship hall at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. Interested adult actors should come prepared to show off your most interesting characters. The performance dates are October 23, 24 & 25th, 2009. Rehearsals are held 2-3 evening per week. The rehearsal schedule will be available at auditions.

Post-Franklin Study Club

Post-Franklin Study Club met at Home Grown, Monona on July 15, 2009. Eleven members were present. Devotions were read by Donna Starkey. Zonna Wullner, president, called the meeting to order. The August 19 club trip meeting was changed to October with the exact date to be set later. The August 19 meeting will now be held at Cho Sun Restaurant in Decorah at 11:30 a.m.

Members are asked to help at the August 28 monthly party at the Good Samaritan Center.

Card shower to honor Deerings

Justin, Tasha, Koal and Ann are suggesting a card shower in honor of their parent's 30th wedding anniversary. Drew and Annette Deering were married at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa on August 4, 1979. Drew is the son of Robert and Sandra Deering and Annette is the daughter of Lorraine and the late Cloy W. Schultz, Jr. all of Postville. Cards and good wishes may be sent to them at 29162 Harding Road, Postville, IA 52162.

Camp Venture members to go on camping trip

Postville Community Schools, as well as all schools in Allamakee County, are participating in Project Venture (PV), a research-based model program through the SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) department of the federal government. All three Allamakee County school districts have received the Reducing Alcohol Abuse grant which includes the implementation of this program with students in grades 7-12.

RSVP seeking volunteers for Good Sam

The Northeast Iowa RSVP program is seeking volunteers to serve at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville. Six RSVP volunteers are currently serving at the center visiting with residents and helping with special events. Plans are under way for two new activities at the center and RSVP is seeking volunteers age 55 and older to assist with these events.

Sale of Agriprocessors approved

Bankruptcy Judge Paul J. Kilburg approved the sale of Agriprocessors, Inc, Postville's meat packing plant, last week for $8.5 million. The purchaser is SHF Industries, which was formed this spring by Hershey Friedman and Daniel Hirsch, Canadian plastics manufacturers. Hirsch is Friedman's son-in-law. Hirsch is expected to be the company's managing director, according to court documents.

DNR representatives conduct public meeting to discuss Hecker Creek

Jeff Berckes and Jen Kurth, both employees of the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) were in Postville last Tuesday evening to discuss stressor identification on Hecker Creek.

Berckes, Program Coordinator of the DNR Watershed Improvement Section, explained to the approximately 40 people present at the meeting that he and Kurth were only dealing with stressors in the creek.

Postville Community School registration

Registration for Postville Community Schools will be held Wednesday and Thursday, August 5 and 6 at the Cora B. Darling School. Parents should receive a registration packet in the mail this week and are asked to bring the packet with them to registration. Call Darlene at 864-7651ext. 421 if you do not receive a packet.

Public Intoxication

On Saturday, July 11, the Fayette County Sheriff's Office was informed of an intoxicated subject at the Pronto store in West Union. A deputy located the subjects in the 100 Block of South Vine. After speaking to the subject, the deputy arrested Gwendolyn Yvonne Johnson, 48, of West Union, for public intoxication and transported her to the Fayette County Jail.
