I am searching for any descendants of Mary Ann Carey Wilson (1840-1907), who married John Wilson in Kentucky in 1854, then moved to Allamakee County about 1870. She was the sister of my great-grandfather, William Carey.

I am hoping to find out more about her and would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone connected to her family.

Not long ago my husband got locked in the basement.

I must admit, when he began knocking on the door and asking to be let out, it was tempting to pretend that I wasn’t home. But I knew if I tried to tiptoe across the living room floor he would hear me and know that I was up there. So I had to let him out.

This used to happen quite often to my son during the time he was living at home and had a bedroom downstairs. The door locks quite easily because all you have to do is push in the button on the doorknob.

Thursday, Kathryn Skilton of Nashua was honored by the Senate as a winner of the statewide “Write Women Back Into History Essay Contest”. This is the fourth consecutive year that Kathryn has placed in the contest. Honoring a young person for a job well done is one of my favorite tasks. Unfortunately, the poor choices some of our young adults make reflect unfavorably on this generation, so it is indeed a pleasure to recognize Kathryn as an outstanding example among her colleagues.

DES MOINES – Iowa Democrats who have given up on convincing Gov. Tom Vilsack to run again are now wondering what Mike Blouin will do. Blouin, a former legislator, congressman and economic development leader in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, now directs the Iowa Department of Economic Development. He’s thinking about a run for governor in 2006 and says he’ll make a final decision this spring or summer.

I can’t remember when they started, but I’m guessing it was when I was around 10 years old. And I certainly can’t recall the very first time, because there have been so many. I would guess, however, that over the past 25 years or so I’ve had no less than 200 dreams about tornadoes.

... that fellow Navy officer and golfing partner, Wayne, from Texas, used to give me a bad time when he tried to teach me the game in California. He was on his college team, so was a scratch golfer. The thing which upset him most was my inability to consistently hit the driver off the tee. That’s the one shot you are completely in control of, he used to note. A fairway lie might be poor, and putting success can depend in part on the condition of the green. But on the tee, you are in total control. The ball can be set at a certain height on a tee.

National Agriculture Week, March 20-26, is a time to celebrate agriculture and give thanks to our farmers. And, as Iowans, we have plenty to celebrate.

Nearly 93,000 Iowa farms helped put the state at the top of national agriculture rankings once again. This past year, Iowa farmers ranked first in corn, hogs and egg production.

Nationally, agriculture employs more than 24 million workers who produce, process, sell and trade the nation's food and fiber. And, in Iowa, the hog and cattle industry combined provided nearly 112,000 jobs across the state.
