The Iowa Historic Preservation Alliance is seeking nominations for its annual Preservation at Its Best awards. Any property of historic interest that has been renovated or restored during 2004 is eligible. Award categories include: small commercial, large commercial, small residential, large residential, rural, and public buildings and archeological sites. A special projects category is included for non-building projects relating to historic preservation.

After nearly two years, the streak is over. Fourteenth-rated MOC-Floyd Valley ended the Waukon girls basketball team’s lengthy win streak Tuesday, March 8 with an 83-76 overtime win at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines. The top-rated Indians fell in Class 3A state quarterfinal action and had their victory train derailed after 52 consecutive wins.

“Obviously it was very disappointing for us,” said Waukon coach Gene Klinge after his 14th state tournament appearance ended. “When you win as often as we have, you get the mindset that you’ll just continue to win.”

For the first time in several years, it looks like the Waukon boys track and field squad will have the depth to do great things. The 2005 Indians have a whopping 74-man roster to compete with this spring.

Head coach Joe O’Neill is excited about the upcoming year. The 74 athletes are the most he’s had during his three-year stay. “It’s good to have that many kids out. To build a successful program, you need to have good numbers and a deep team. We didn’t have the depth to keep up with some of the other conference teams the last few years.”

To mark the 50th and final Iowa girls state basketball tournament at Veterans Memorial Auditorium, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union invited 16 of the state’s greatest girls basketball teams to be honored during the March 7-12 event.

Waukon native Ray Svendson was one of the many individuals to revisit the hardwood at Vets. The 1966 WHS graduate coached the Fort Dodge Dodgers to top three finishes in 1983, 1984, and 1985.

Next week’s print edition of The Standard will feature a commemorative section about the 2004-2005 Waukon girls basketball season.

The section will include comments from players, coaches, cheerleaders, and managers, as well as statistics, photos, and more from another record-breaking year of Indian basketball.

The Waukon Park & Rec Department will host a youth soccer program for children in grades first through sixth during the spring of 2005.

The program will run similarly to the fall flag football program. Games will be played on Saturday mornings. First and second graders will play in a division with third and fourth graders and fifth and sixth graders also combining for competition.

Coaches and sponsors are also needed. Sponsorship is $25 per team.

Cathy Wilkins, age 49, of Decorah, Iowa, died suddenly Thursday, March 10, 2005, at the Winneshiek Medical Center, Decorah. Funeral services were held Monday, March 14, at Glenwood Lutheran Church, Decorah, with Rev. Susan Debner officiating. Burial was in Glenwood East Cemetery, Decorah. Schluter - Balik Funeral Home of Decorah was in charge of arrangements.

Cathy Marie Rude was born August 1, 1955, the daughter of Curtis and Martha (Sollien) Rude in Decorah. Cathy attended North Winneshiek school.

Robert J. “Bob” Weymiller, 77, of rural New Albin, Iowa, died Monday, March 14, 2005, at his home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 16, at 2 p.m. at the Community Center in New Albin, with Rev. Keith Putney officiating. Burial will be in the New Albin City Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Center in New Albin. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon is handling arrangements.
