Karna Lynne Groe and Shawn Paul Schroeder were united in marriage Sept. 4, 2004, in a 4 p.m. ceremony at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Waukon. The bride’s father, Rev. Lynn G. Groe, officiated the ceremony.

Parents of the couple are Rev. Lynn G. and Linda Groe of Waukon and Dave and Becca Schroeder of De Witt, Iowa. Grandmother of the bride is LaVonne Holstad of Forest Lake, Minn., and Ruby Tabler of De Witt is the groom’s grandmother.

Christine Ward and Troy Mundt exchanged wedding vows Oct. 9, 2004, at Newman Catholic Student Center in Iowa City, Iowa. Father John Stecher officiated the ceremony.

Parents of the couple are Mary and the late Donald Ward of Waukon and Vernon and Dianne Mundt of Albuquerque, N.M. The bride’s grandparents are the late Emmet and Marcella Ward and the late Emmett and Lillian Schwartzhoff. Grandparents of the groom are the late Henry and Elsie Mundt and Margaret and the late Harold Pesina of Silver Lake, Minn.

Melissa Ann Darling and Brent Scott Lubahn have announced their upcoming wedding on April 23 in Fort Worth, Texas. Melissa is the daughter of Cindy and Dave Darling of Dallas, Texas. Brent is the son of Scott and Julie Lubahn of Winona, Minn. Fran and Keith Fahey and Donna and Ernie Lubahn of Waukon are Brent’s grandparents.

Melissa and Brent will be married in the Robert Carr Chapel on the Texas Christian University campus in Fort Worth. They will reside in their home in Fort Worth.

Janet McMillan and Gary Jones were united in marriage during a Tuesday, March 1, 2005 ceremony. The couple will celebrate the occasion Saturday, April 2, 2005, with a dance at Wild Willy’s in Waukon. The event will run from 7 to 11 p.m.

Parents of the couple are Glorianne and the late Marion Wicks of Decorah and LeRoy and Bonnie Jones of Harpers Ferry. Grandparents of the groom are Beacher and Beulah Bolman.

Daughter of the bride is Katie McMillan and son of the groom is Darren Anderson.

Invitations have been sent out for the 25-year reunion of the Waukon Senior High Class of 1980. The event will be held Saturday, July 16, 2005, at the Waukon Golf & Country Club beginning at 5 p.m. Any class member that did not receive an invitation should contact either Jane (Waldron) Sivesind at (563) 568-6244, or Scott Garrett at (203) 292-3439.

It seems like every time we read the paper some foundation or organization is asking the supervisors for donations. $30,000 here and $14,000 there, so the funds would be matched by grants. To me grants are also tax payers’ money.

In regard to the NICC satellite center, a few years back it was in the paper that the county had a six million dollar surplus. Now, a year or maybe two years ago, it was in the paper that the six million was on interest at somewhere around one percent. So, where is the six million?

This letter is in regard to our newly remodeled library in Lansing. WOW, what a difference a year makes! We now have a facility that the children, elderly, and general population of this community can utilize in so many different ways. If you have not stopped in to see this magnificent building, I urge you to do so soon.

The majority of our time before this week was spent in committee meetings preparing bills for debate on the floor. The deadline for most of those bills to “funnel” out of committee has now passed. The legislature now will begin debate on those bills as work continues on finishing the budget process.

Tomorrow marks the end of funnel week. Under Joint Rules, bills that fail to clear a House or Senate Committee by the funnel deadline are no longer eligible for debate during the session. Only bills that remain in the Appropriations or Ways and Means Committee are funnel-proof.

Vilsack has proposed several tax changes for the state that he believes will reform and simplify the tax system and help Iowa’s economy. Among the Governor’s ideas are the elimination of federal deductibility from state income taxes (the subject of last week’s In The Public Interest column) and changes to the state sales tax system.
