Hindertje “Henny” Kats

Hindertje “Henny” Kats, 65, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at her home in Burr Oak, Iowa. Funeral services were held Monday, March 21 at First Baptist Church, Waukon, with Rev. Danny J. Volbrecht officiating. Burial was in Phelps Cemetery, Decorah. Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah was in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Hall

Mildred Mary Hall, 76, died Saturday, March 12, 2005, at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon. Father Joseph Schneider officiated at the funeral Mass Wednesday, March 16, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Waukon, and at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Hanson’s Funeral Home of Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Neil Kiesau

Neil Kiesau, 61, of rural Lansing, died peacefully at his home Friday, March 18, 2005, following a courageous fight with cancer. Funeral services were held Monday, March 21 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lansing, Iowa, with Pastor Laura Gentry officiating. Burial was in Lansing Ridge Cemetery, rural Lansing. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Gordon Gantenbein

Gordon J. “Gordie” Gantenbein died Saturday, February 26, 2005, at his home in Riverton, Wyo., at the age of 77. Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, March 1 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Riverton. Interment followed at Mountain View Cemetery. A Rosary was held Monday, February 28 at St. Margaret’s Church.

Eric Jepsen

Eric James Jepsen, infant son of Gary and Shannon Jepsen, was stillborn at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines Friday, March 11, 2005.

Eric is survived by his parents and sister, Natalie of Polk City; grandparents Lynn and Lois Boelman of Ackley and Charles and Betty Jepsen of Waukon; and maternal great-grandparents Henry and Louise Eckhoff of Steamboat Rock; a cousin, Kellen; and aunts and uncles.

Grief support group meets March 29

The local grief support group will meet Tuesday, March 29, at 3 p.m. in the Dining Room at Veterans Memorial Hospital. This informal meeting is open to anyone suffering from any type of loss, whether it be death, divorce, illness, or some other grief. Please feel free to attend and bring a friend. This grief support group meets the last Tuesday of every month at Veterans Memorial Hospital.

Bill Withers, MD and Christy Kuennen, PA-C, have been a part of the staff since the beginning. Withers has been caring for patients in the area for almost 35 years. Kuennen is interested in caring for patients of all ages and has a special interest in well-woman and well-baby care.

Sign-up now for April 9 Prepared Childbirth Education class

Veterans Memorial Hospital will hold a Prepared Childbirth Education class Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Large Conference Room. Lunch will be provided.

During the class, instructors concentrate on labor and delivery and practicing the relaxation and breathing techniques. Other education issues on pregnancy and exercise, nutrition during pregnancy, medications available during delivery, and care of the new baby are also discussed. In addition, infant CPR is also taught.

Free asthma training for all Allamakee County day care providers at VMH

A free asthma seminar will be offered to all Allamakee County Day Care Providers Thursday, April 21, in the Veterans Memorial Hospital Large Conference Room. This program is beneficial for day care providers who care for asthmatic children, children with other respiratory problems or just want to learn more about respiratory care and treatments. The program is sponsored by Veterans Memorial Hospital and funded by the Wellmark Foundation. Jeanne Stein, R.C.P., Respiratory Care Practioner, is coordinating the program.
