Easter was an important holiday in our little town. Aside from the solemn and joyful observances of Holy Week and Easter Sunday, there was the tradition of wearing new clothes. We might not have an Easter Parade and we certainly weren’t New York City - Fifth Avenue, but we did try to keep up with the latest fashions and sported our spring finery on Easter morning. Sometimes it was nothing more than a new hat, or even an old hat with new trimming, but we did the best we could.

HAWC Partnership for Children, specializing in services for children ages 0-5 and assisting parents to meet the basic needs of children of all ages in Howard, Allamakee, Winneshiek and Clayton counties, announces that Mike Bergan will be the new director.

Waukon Nursery School has announced plans to offer an all-day preschool program for children preparing to enter kindergarten in 2006. The all-day program will supplement, not replace, the school's half-day programs for 3-4 year old students and 4-5 year old students.

Thursday evening, Feb. 24, the elementary and junior high schools of the Allamakee Community School District hosted the Allamakee Solo Festival for band students in grades 6-9. Each student was responsible for preparing a solo and/or duet to preform for a judge. After each performance, the students received a rating of “Good”, “Excellent”, “Superior”, or “Outstanding”.

The Boy Scout program was founded in 1910 to meet the needs and wants of younger boys eager to be scouts. The Cub Scout program, first known as Cubbing, was founded in 1930. The program was designed for boys ages 9 to 11 and based on Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book.

The Waukon Lions Club will be hosting its annual Variety Show Saturday, April 2 in the Auditorium of Waukon Senior High School. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the event, with the show slated to start at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are currently available at Waukon State Bank, Farmers & Merchants Savings Bank, Citizens State Bank, Hartig Drug, and Elliott Jewelers, or from any Waukon Lions Club member.

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in a brief regular meeting Monday, March 21 to discuss the items on a very short agenda. Before diving into the agenda items, the board heard concerns from Allamakee County Treasurer Lori Hesse regarding a possible air quality issue in the Treasurer's Office. Employees and customers to the office have complained of a strange, unidentifiable odor in the office. Hesse noted that she could not smell anything, and Supervisor Bill Clark also noted that he went up to check things out, and also could not detect any odor.

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its annual banquet Saturday, April 9 at the Waukon Reception and Banquet Center. Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner being served at 7 p.m. and the evening’s program set to begin at 8 p.m. One of the highlights of the evening will be the announcement of Waukon’s “Person of the Year”.
