USDA Rural Development Conducting Information Session on Energy and Value-Added Producer Grant Programs via 15-Site ICN Broadcast April 1

Learn more about two exciting agriculture producer- and small business-oriented grant programs by attending an Information Session sponsored by USDA Rural Development from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, April 1. The session will be conducted via the Iowa Communications Network (ICN) and broadcast at 15 locations throughout the state, including at Northeast Iowa Community College’s Dairy Education Center located at 1527 Hwy 150 South - Room #114 in Calmar.

Clair J. Hammel



Clair J. Hammel, age 91 of Plum City, WI died Sunday, March 20, 2005 at the Plum City Care Center, Plum City. Funeral service will be held Monday, March 28 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Plum City, with Rev. Ambrose Blenker officiating. Spring burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, March 27 at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

New Albin News

Joan Meyer hosted her “Nickels” Club on Thursday afternoon. A dessert luncheon was served at 1:00 p.m. Norma Fruechte won high; Iris Sires, guest and Phyllis Breeser, low.

The movie “The Passion of the Christ” will be showing at the Way Station Theater on Friday, March 25 beginning at 8:30 p.m. This is an R-rated movie, so children under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult. The movie on the 26th will be at the regular time (1:00 p.m.) with doors opening at 12:45. Concessions are sold during the movies.

Gleanings from DeSoto

Our sympathy is extended to the family of Michael Paggi who passed away last week. He was living in the former Jim Paggi house in Victory. Funeral services for Michael Paggi was ot Thoreson’s on Tuesday, with burial in Victory cemetery.

On Bill Roger’s death, I wish to express my sympathy to Janet Rogers and her family also. I have known Janet for a good many years.

Kee High School Participates in Credit Card Education Program

State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald announced today that Kee High School was among the 300 schools that participated in the pilot Credit Card Literacy Program sponsored by State Treasurer Fitzgerald’s office and the Center for Student Credit Card Education. “These materials are designed to prepare high school students for their financial future as they enter college and the workforce,” commented State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald.

Assessor exams to be held in April

Iowa Department of Revenue Director Michael Ralston recently announced the scheduling of statewide examinations for the positions of deputy assessor and city or county assessor. The examination for deputy assessor will be held April 9 at 8:30 a.m. in the fourth floor conference room of the Hoover State Office Building in Des Moines. Examination for city or county assessor will be held April 16 at 8:30 a.m., also in the Hoover Building, fourth floor conference room.

Prairie’s Edge to hold annual meeting this Saturday

Prairie’s Edge Sustainable Woods Cooperative will hold its annual meeting from 9 a.m. to 12 Noon this Saturday, March 26 at the Postville State Bank building in Postville. Guest speakers will talk about marketing trees and wood products on a new website and also the success of Kickapoo Woods Cooperative in Wisconsin. The public is welcome to attend.
