As of March 15, another trapping season closed on the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. Few of the 3.5 million visitors to the refuge annually know such an activity takes place. But, for a few, trapping season is what they live for each year.

Trapping of furbearers has gone on since human occupancy of the Upper Mississippi River Valley. Many of the towns along the Mississippi can trace their roots to a time when fur was the commodity that drove their commerce.

Another early family of settlers into the Wexford valley was Michael Mooney and his family, who came from Dublin, Ireland. They survived the hazardous voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to immigrate to the United States in 1939 by way of Savannah, Georgia.

The Allamakee County Farm Bureau Women met March 15 at 10:30 a.m. Betty Decker, co-chairman, opened the meeting by reading a hunting joke and "When March Marches In". Margaret Dahlstrom led the pledge to the flag. Devotions were given by Betty Steiber, reading "The Twelve Rules For Happiness" followed by some facts entitled "Did You Know?" about the building in Washington D.C. which houses the U.S. Supreme Court and the Ten Commandments.

The very first Supreme Court Justice, John Jay, said:

A Dorchester man was injured Thursday, March 3, 2005, in a single-vehicle accident on Dorchester Drive.

According to the report, Layne H. Christensen, 50, was traveling west on the road around 6:10 p.m. when he struck a guard rail. The vehicle went over the guard rail and into the ditch, hitting numerous small trees before coming to rest.

Christensen was transported to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon and later cited for failing to maintain control, driving with a suspended license, and driving while intoxicated.

Earl M. Hanson, 83, died at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee, WI March 23, 2005. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 9 in Verona, WI. He chose to be cremated.

Earl M. Hanson was born August 15, 1921, in Waukon, the son of Nels and Alvina (Meier) Hanson. He graduated from Waukon High School and served in the United States Navy from 1942-1945.

Kathryn D. Halvorson 63, of Meriden, CT, beloved wife of Vernon Halvorson, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at Connecticut Hospice with her loving family by her side. Services took place Saturday, March 26, 2005, at the First United Methodist Church in Meriden with the Reverend Eric A. Henderson officiating. Burial was private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.

A former Waukon resident, Richard R. (Dick) Williams, passed away after a lengthy illness in Vancouver, WA January 12, 2005.

Born in Waukon March 23, 1931 to Raymond and Elsie (Darling) Williams, Dick attended the Waukon schools and later moved to Mesa, AZ. He worked for the City of Mesa for many years and retired as the City Electrical Engineer.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Fry, his parents, and his brother, Dale.

Eli James Jepsen, infant son of Gary and Shannon Jepsen, was stillborn at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Friday, March 11, 2005.

Eli is survived by his parents and sister, Natalie, of Polk City; grandparents Lynn and Lois Boelman of Ackley, and Charles and Betty Jepsen of Waukon; and maternal great-grandparents Henry and Lois Eckhoff of Steamboat Rock; a cousin, Kellen; and aunts and uncles.

A memorial service was held at Hamilton’s, near Highland Memory Gardens, Monday, March 14, 2005.

Brad Krambeer, Athletic Trainer at Veterans Memorial Hospital, accepted an Iowa Sports Medicine Award at last Friday night’s Iowa Boy’s State Basketball Tournament. He and his family, wife Becky and son Konnor, as well as his parents, Kenny and Gloria Krambeer, were present at Vet’s Auditorium in Des Moines while Krambeer received his award during halftime of the boys class 2A championship game.
