“In the 1930’s my parents bought a building lot from Happy Nipper, and my father, with the help of several friends and relatives, built a simple summer cottage on the banks of Harpers Slough. Our family spent a part of 10 or 12 summers there. Dad commuted to work in Waukon every day. There were some interesting people who made their homes in the area and lived there year-round. Some of them became good friends of our family. Their children were our playmates. These sketches are a compilation of memories of several of us who lived through those ten years together.

The Allamakee Music Boosters is a club that was organized in the early 1970’s with the purpose of supporting the music programs in grades K-12 in the Allamakee Community School District. Contributions to the Allamakee Music Boosters this past year have helped with the financial support of many items to promote “Music in Our Schools”, which is celebrated during the month of March.

The Area Christian Women’s Club will meet at 12 Noon Tuesday, April 5 at the Grace Fellowship Hall located at Hwy. 9 and Montgomery Street in Decorah. The meeting program will focus on how to live healthy and happily ever after.

“How to Live Healthy Ever After”: Jennifer Mikkelson, of Decorah is a wife and mother, and a certified personal trainer and coordinator for Team Rehab. She teaches aerobics, senior classes, and therapy that can be done at home.

Illinois, Louisville, North Carolina and Michigan State have played their way into that final tier of competition.

Likewise, a handful of this year’s contest entries have also set themselves atop the competition. Listed below are the top 25 entries after the first two weeks of the contest. Just over half of these top 25 have two possible teams remaining to play in the championship final, and there are others lurking behind that have other championship combinations. Just like the Final Four, it’s anybody’s ballgame right now.

After a 1-13 season in 2004, the 2005 Waukon boys golf team is looking up. The Indians are hoping to improve on last year’s finish and play the links competitively this spring. Youth once again dominates the Tribe’s roster. Fifteen freshmen are preparing for the season, as are 11 sophomores. “We will be fairly inexperienced,” said head coach Leon Mindham, “but I think we should be improved.” Should the Indians make strides this spring, Mindham thinks it will be because of the offseason work several athletes put in last summer.

After back to back state qualifying seasons, the Waukon girls golf squad will have to start nearly from scratch in 2005. Only one letterwinner returns from last spring’s team that placed eighth at the state meet, but that’s not stopping the Tribe from having a positive outlook for the year.

“We’re indeed going to have a fresh start,” remarked coach Kathy McMillan. “But I feel good after watching them in practice. There’s potential, but we will have to work hard.”

The Waukon Indian boys track team took part in a pair of indoor events this past week to further gear the Tribe for its fast-approaching outdoor season. In a pair of unscored meets last week, the Indians competed in the Northeast Iowa Conference Indoor at Luther College in Decorah Tuesday, March 22 and then matched up with some of the state’s larger schools at the Dickinson Relays in Cedar Falls Friday, March 25.

The Waukon Indian girls track team got its 2005 season of competition underway this past week with the Northeast Iowa Conference Indoor at Luther College in Decorah Tuesday, March 22. A squad already low in numbers compared to previous years was diminished even further for this meet due to a variety of circumstances.

Saturday, March 19, a team of nine Waukon Indian girls basketball players competed in the eighth grade division at the NAYS tournament at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The squad captured the bronze medal.

Said coach Paul Huffman, “The team’s three objectives were to have fun, play hard, and believe in themselves and each other. The girls achieved their objectives and were rewarded with a hard-earned medal. Both their parents and coach couldn’t be prouder.”
