Gardening expert and author Tim Wood suggests thinking of flowering shrubs as perennials that don't have to be divided or staked, and that stay where you plant them. "They're easy to grow and require little pruning or dividing. Varieties with colorful foliage look great all season long. Flowers are just icing on the cake," he says.

Dark, Rich Foliage

More than one-third of American adults have used complementary and alternative medicine, according to a survey from the National Institutes of Health's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The survey showed 55 percent of respondents used alternative medicine because they believed it would help when combined with conventional medical treatments, 26 percent because it was suggested from a health care professional, and 13 percent because conventional medicine was too expensive.

That's the idea behind a national initiative geared toward bringing agricultural education into the classroom.

The program, called Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC), has grown popular with educators across the country. Its supporters say learning about farming and science not only provides easy-to-understand examples of how botany, biology and chemistry affect our lives, it also helps spark an intellectual curiosity in kids. Students involved in AITC are encouraged to consider where food and fiber comes from and what goes into producing it.

According to the 2000 Census, over four million people in the U.S. work at home every day and the numbers are increasing. From stay-at-home moms to college students to retirees, work- at-home opportunities are an attractive option. So it should come as no surprise that scams offering work-at-home jobs that pay "big financial rewards" have also grown in popularity.

Harpers Ferry

Father O’Sullivan of Wexford was a caller at Father Nolan’s last Thursday. He is enjoying his rides in a new Chevrolet car which he recently purchased of Spinner at Lansing.

Mrs. L. D. Terrance and baby of Bridgeport, Wis., came last week for a visit at the home of her sister, Mrs. Leo Heffern, and took home her little daughter, Helen, who had been at the Heffern home for two weeks.

Bridge Work Continues

I learned the other day of the death of one of my dearest friends. Florence Herried. Although, sadly four years ago she came down with Alzheimers. It is one of the hardest things you face when someone you have known for over 50 years and all the good and wonderful times we’ve had come to a point of not being able to discuss them. However, I do thank God for all the wonderful memories of those years gone by. My sympathy and heart go out to Arland, her daughter, Rita, her husband, Fred, and the grandchildren.
