U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists have begun the first comprehensive, high-resolution airborne survey to study the rock layers under a region of northeastern Iowa and southeastern Minnesota. The survey is expected to last through January. When the data analysis is complete, resulting state-of-the-art, 3-D subsurface maps will help USGS researchers improve an assessment of mineral and water resources of the region.
As part of this research, both a low-flying airplane and helicopter with auxiliary instrumentation will be used.

Allamakee County’s Corner of Hope (COH) Growing Project completed another successful year with a record amount of funds raised, $61,500. That locally raised total reflects the combined efforts of receipts from harvesting and selling crops of corn, soybeans and hay from eight different plots across the county, along with generous contributions from churches, banks, agri-businesses, and individuals, and many contributions of products and services to help plant, grow and harvest the crops.

The Allamakee County Conservation Board has recently partnered with the Waukon Wellness Center and the Main Street Lansing Office to make snowshoes available for rent to the public. The Allamakee County Conservation Board purchased thirty pairs of snowshoes for promoting healthy outdoor winter activity and conducting programs in area schools. These initial snowshoes were used in area schools during the week and made available to the public for rent on the weekends.

In response to the school shooting tragedy that transpired Friday, December 14 in Newtown, CT, Allamakee Community School District Superintendent Dave Herold has composed and distributed the following letter to parents of students within the Allamakee Community School District. Anyone with further questions regarding the letter or school district policies is invited to contact Superintendent Herold at 563-568-3409.

Dr. Steven Perkins, D.O. of Mayo Clinic Health System, Waukon advises that area health care facilities are currently experiencing a “very high amount” of cases of influenza within the local community which can be, he advises, “100% covered by this year’s flu vaccine.” On behalf of the local health care community, he further advises area residents to get their flu shots if they haven’t done so already. He also warns that anyone experiencing fevers, chills, sore throat or nausea should stay home from work, school or other community activities and be evaluated by a physician.

Saturday, December 15 at approximately 3:25 a.m. the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a one-vehicle rollover accident on State Highway 9 approximately one mile west of Lansing. A resulting accident report indicates a vehicle operated by Robert Joseph Lenz of Waukon, age 24, was traveling west on State Highway 9 when it left the roadway and rolled over, ejecting the driver.
