Allamakee County Dairy Days Banquet is March 24

The 2012 Allamakee County Dairy Days Banquet will be held Saturday, March 24 at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon. The meal will be served from 7-8:30 p.m., with the program starting at 8 p.m. The annual celebration recognizes the importance of the dairy industry in Allamakee County and the contributions dairy families make to this important industry.

Thompson receives mandatory sentence for Second Degree Murder

Christopher Craig Thompson of Monona, found guilty November 18, 2011 of Second Degree Murder for the October 2, 2010 shooting death of Angela Marie Gabel, was sentenced Monday, January 23 in Allamakee County District Court to 35 to 50 years in prison, the mandatory sentence.
In addition to the prison sentence, Thompson was ordered to pay restitution to Gabel’s estate in the amount of $150,000, $20,094 to the Iowa Crime Victims Compensation Fund, plus court costs, costs of prosecution and jail fees.

Meet new NICC President event rescheduled

The meet and greet event scheduled at Northeast Iowa Community College's (NICC) Waukon Center with the college's new president, Dr. Liang Chee Wee, originally scheduled for Thursday, January 12 has been rescheduled due to inclement weather that gripped the area that day. The event has been rescheduled for Wednesday, February 8 at the Waukon NICC Center, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.

"Raise the Standard of Health" incentives offered for participation in 100 Day Wellness Challenge

Live Healthy Iowa’s 100 Day Wellness Challenge will begin in just a few days, and The Standard Newspaper is offering some incentives for area businesses and individuals to try and “Raise the Standard of Health" in Allamakee County.
Businesses willing to pay the discounted entry fee for a team of employees to participate in the 100 Day Challenge could have that entry fee completely reimbursed in advertising with The Standard. Likewise, individuals who form their own team or are signed up on their own can receive $10 off a new 12-month subscription to The Standard.
