The Allamakee County Soil and Water Conservation District (ACSWCD) and Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) would like to remind producers who have terraces on their farm that those terraces may fall under a maintenance agreement if they received cost-share funds to install them.

The public is invited to join State Senator Mary Jo Wilhelm for a discussion this Saturday, March 31, from 1-2 p.m., at the Waukon Wellness Center, located at 1220 Third Avenue NW in Waukon. Senator Wilhelm welcomes discussion with constituents at these listening post meetings, and she can also be reached at mary.jo.wilhelm@legis.iowa.gov or by calling her at home at 563-547-4156.

Iowa Homeland Security, Emergency Management Division, and the National Weather Service have declared April 2-6 as Severe Weather Awareness Week. A statewide tornado drill will be held April 4, starting at 10 a.m.
At 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, Allamakee County will be blowing Outdoor Warning Sirens in all communities. Residents are encouraged to take this time to consider their planning for potential disaster situations. It is also important to recognize and be aware of the different warning devices that cover a particular area.

The 2012 Allamakee County Dairy Banquet will be held this Saturday, March 24 at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon. The meal will be served from 7-8:30 p.m. with the program starting at 8 p.m.
The annual celebration recognizes the importance of the dairy industry in Allamakee County and the contributions dairy families make to this important industry. Every year, top producers from the county are recognized at the banquet. In addition, several other awards are presented that evening, some of which include the following:
• Outstanding Young Dairy Family Award

The Driftless Area Scenic Byway (DASB) Board of Directors will seek public input on a comprehensive plan for managing the 100-mile Scenic Byway from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 20 at the Farmers & Merchants Savings Bank Community Room in Waukon. Anyone with an interest in this project is encouraged to participate in this public forum.

The Waukon Police Department has reported a recent rash of attempts to “scam” local residents. In the most common scam, the victim is contacted by telephone by someone claiming to be a relative who is in some kind of legal trouble in a foreign country. The scammer asks the victim to send money via Western Union to pay a lawyer or pay their bail. There are many different variations, but the common theme is a request for a wire transfer of cash.
