What began as a step in the right direction in January of this year eventually ended up in Des Moines in early May, with nearly a million minutes of physical activity logged along the way, a shiny Community Cup Challenge trophy brought back to Allamakee County, and a healthier lifestyle adopted by many.

After winning both the State and National levels of the annual Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest earlier this spring, East Elementary fourth grader Sophie Halverson has made history at the Waukon school by becoming its first-ever Grand National Champion. The Grand National crown means Halverson has been selected as having the best handwriting of any fourth grader in the entire nation.

Linda Lucy, Staff Assistant to Senator Tom Harkin, will serve as featured speaker at the 2012 Memorial Day Observance Program being held at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon Monday, May 28. In addition to the traditional F-16 Fighter Jet Flyover that takes place in conjunction with the program, there will also be Cannon Salutes for POW/MIA Awareness and Civil War Sesquicentennial Recognition that will include the live firing of a black powder cannon and a 12-pound Mountain Howitzer, respectively, by Allen, Linda and Noah Lyon of the 3rd Light Artillery, Waukon.

Plans are underway for an Allamakee County Korean War Veterans Armistice Day Celebration scheduled for Saturday, July 28 at the Waukon City Park by the Allamakee County Veterans Honoring Committee. The event will take place at 1 p.m. at the shelter house near the ball diamond and will honor both living and deceased veterans from Allamakee County who served during the Korean War era.

Live Healthy Iowa’s 100 Day Wellness Challenge has come to an end as of May 1, and the results indicate a healthier Iowa, including residents of Allamakee County. According to Live Healthy Iowa reports, 1,713 Allamakee County residents participated in the Governor’s 100 Day Wellness Challenge and Healthy Kids Initiative. The 1,713 adult and youth participants represent 12.8% of the county population (age five and above), and that percentage placed Allamakee County third among all counties in the state of Iowa as far as percentage of population participating in this year's Challenge.
