Lansing Mayor Don Peters resigns

Lansing Mayor Don Peters unexpectedly resigned this past week, sending a brief letter of resignation to the City Clerk stating simply that his resignation would be effective June 26 at midnight. Peters did not offer an explanation for his resignation in the letter and has been unavailable for comment prior to publication of this week’s edition of The Standard.

Kee baseball coach Gene Schultz named NHSCA Coach of the Year

The National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) based in Easton, PA recently announced that Kee High School baseball coach Gene Schultz is among the organization's selections as National High School Coaches of the Year for 2012.
This year marks the 13th year the NHSCA has honored these achievers in high school coaching on a nationwide basis. This year’s recipients, selected in a total of 20 boys and girls sports, are from 19 different states.

Local organizers striving for grant funding for Waukon City Park through "America is Your Park" campaign

Voting is underway in Coca-Cola’s third-annual "America is Your Park" campaign, which will award a $100,000 grant to the park that receives the most online votes and $50,000 and $25,000 grants to the second- and third-place park, respectively. A $15,000 grant will also be awarded at random to a park that finishes within fourth through 25th places in the final voting.

Ag Secretary Northey to host town meeting in Waukon July 11

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey will be hosting a town meeting in Waukon Wednesday, July 11 at 10 a.m. at the Allamakee County Farm Bureau office, which is located at 14 First Avenue NE. The meeting is open to the public and is an opportunity for Secretary Northey to hear from Iowans and discuss agriculture and the issues facing farmers and consumers in the state.

Saturday accident results in loss of power, multiple charges

Many residents and businesses in Waukon and the surrounding area were without electrical service for approximately two hours Saturday evening, June 23 after a utility pole (pictured above) was damaged in a single-vehicle accident, causing a chain reaction of power outages that reportedly reached all the way to the Rossville, Waterville and Ludlow areas.

Korean War Veterans Armistice Day Celebration planned for July 28

Plans are underway for an Allamakee County Korean War Veterans Armistice Day Celebration scheduled for Saturday, July 28 at the Waukon City Park by the Allamakee County Veterans Honoring Committee. The event will take place at 1 p.m. at the shelter house near the ball diamond and will honor both living and deceased veterans from Allamakee County who served during the Korean War era.
