Pam Benjegerdes of Waukon has formally announced her candidacy to seek re-election to the office of Allamakee County Auditor as a Nominated by Petition “No Party” candidate. After falling shy of reclaiming the Republican nomination in the June Primary Election, Benjegerdes will rejoin the race for Auditor in the November 6 General Election and will be included on the ballot with two additional candidates for County Auditor, Republican nominee Denise Beyer and Democratic nominee Janice Thorson.

The Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH), together with Elliott Jewelers of Waukon, will be hosting the eighth annual Women’s Health Day wellness event and luncheon Tuesday, September 25 at the Waukon Banquet Center. All ages are invited to attend this educational event, beginning at 11 a.m. with a wellness fair offering a variety of free health tests and information, and including a salad luncheon and program held from Noon to 1 p.m.

Due to the Labor Day holiday Monday, September 3, the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors held its regular weekly meeting last Tuesday, September 4 and reconvened Monday, September 10.

The Allamakee County Cattlemen’s Association is seeking applicants for the honor of Allamakee County Beef Queen and Princess. Candidates must be 16-20 years of age, and applicants’ parent(s) or themselves must be an Allamakee County Cattlemen member. Those who would like to become a member of the Allamakee County Cattlemen should pay the membership fee and fill out a membership form.

Iowans interested in the results of a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) study to improve water quality in the Yellow River and its tributaries in Allamakee and Winneshiek counties can attend one of three meetings to be held September 26 and September 27. Citizens are encouraged to bring their questions to the meeting.

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey and Iowa Department of Natural Resources Director Chuck Gipp presented 67 Iowa farm families with the Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award during a ceremony at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines Friday, August 17. Karl Brooks, Regional Administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Region 7 Office in Kansas City, KS was also present at the ceremony to recognize the winners.

Top dairies competed for honors in the Holstein Dairy Cattle Show judged Friday, August 10 at the 2012 Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.
Regancrest of Waukon showed the Grand Champion Female, Regancrest S Byesha-ET, which was also the Intermediate Champion Female. Reserve Grand Champion Female honors went to Dan Hovden of Decorah, who was also runner-up for the Premier Exhibitor award.
Moondale Farm of Monona swept both the Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder titles, while Henkeseen Holsteins of Luana received second in the Premier Breeder category.

It is now known that the head-on collision on Highway 76 near the community of Rossville Sunday, August 26 did result in one fatality and four injuries, according to further updated reports issued by the Iowa State Patrol. The updated reports indicate that a southbound 2001 GMC Sonoma pick-up crossed the center line and collided head-on with a northbound 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up just west of Rossville, with the GMC then catching fire and becoming fully engulfed before authorities could arrive on scene.

Former one-room school teacher Nona Hansmeier of Waukon and the Allamakee County Historical Society’s Little Red Schoolhouse are featured in the film "Country School: One Room - One Nation", an award-winning documentary film by Kelly and Tammy Rundle of Fourth Wall Films of Moline, IL.
