Fields of Faith event to be held at Waukon High School October 10; Public welcome

Students, parents and community members are invited to join thousands of others on athletic fields all across the nation Wednesday, October 10 to share their Christian faith with fellow students during the seventh annual national Fields of Faith event. This rapidly-growing, interdenominational outreach event will be held at more than 400 locations throughout the nation on this same date.

Plenty of growth, creativity evident at Fifth Annual Big Pumpkin Contest in Waukon

The fifth annual Big Pumpkin Contest was held Sunday, September 30 under near-perfect weather conditions at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon. The biggest pumpkin weighed in at the contest topped the scales at 415 pounds, and was turned in by TASC, Inc. of Waukon.
Along with the biggest pumpkins weighed in, other winners of the various cooking contests are also listed below:

Former New Albin man is victim of workplace shooting in Minneapolis

Jacob Beneke, formerly of New Albin, was among six people killed Thursday, September 27 in a workplace shooting that took place at a Minneapolis, MN sign company. Reports from the incident indicate an employee of Accent Signage Systems responded to being fired that same day by shooting the business owner, several other employees (including Beneke) and a UPS driver before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life.

Farm accident claims rural Waterville man

The Allamakee County Sheriff’s Department and the Veterans Memorial Hospital Ambulance from Waukon responded to a report just after 10 a.m. Thursday, September 20 of a farming accident at 1058 Chestnut Road, rural Waterville. The Sheriff’s Department reported that Neil Bresnahan, age 71, was killed when a corn chopper head he was working on fell on top of him. Bresnahan’s full obituary appears in this week's issue of The Standard.

Little Switzerland FFA claims top honors in Iowa Milk Quality & Products competition

The 2012 Iowa Future Farmers of America (FFA) Milk Quality & Products Career Development Event was held in conjunction with the Blue Ribbon Dairy Classic in West Union Saturday, September 15. A total of 16 teams and 54 individuals participated in this year’s Career Development Event designed to provide students an opportunity to display their knowledge and skills in the area of milk quality and dairy foods.
