Donations and volunteers sought for Waukon High School Project Prom 2015

Waukon High School Prom 2015 is scheduled for Saturday, April 25. Parents of the high school students are again hosting the annual substance-free Post Prom event at the former Waukon Junior High School gymnasium immediately following Prom, from midnight until 4 a.m.
Very strong past support from parents of the Waukon High School student body, as well as from local businesses and civic organizations, has resulted in the continued success of providing Prom-goers with a safe alternative for celebrating the annual event. That support has provided these young adults with games, food, entertainment and prizes at the Post Prom event each year.
Assistance is needed for the event in the following two areas:

Waukon High School FBLA Chapter claims championship honors at State Conference

The Waukon High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), under the direction of high school instructor Joan Schwartz, was crowned Chapter of the Year and won overall team championship honors at the annual State Leadership Conference held in Coralville Thursday-Saturday, March 12-14. Those team championship honors stemmed from an abundance of top-end individual and group finishes by chapter members in various competitions throughout the Conference. Further details about the Waukon chapter's championship efforts will appear in a future edition of The Standard.

Waukon High School Chapter of National Honor Society inducts new members for 2015

Waukon High School welcomed the newest members into its local chapter of the National Honor Society at the chapter's annual induction ceremony held Tuesday, March 10 at Waukon High School. Keystone AEA offering Substitute Authorization Class in late March

Keystone Area Education Agency (AEA) will be offering the required training course for the Iowa Substitute Authorization. This authorization allows an individual to substitute in a PK-12 classroom. An individual who holds a Paraeducator Certificate without a bachelor’s degree and completes the substitute authorization program is authorized to substitute only in the special education classroom in which the individual paraeducator is employed.
The four core components of the course are Classroom Management, Strategies for Learning, Diversity and Ethics. Upon successful completion of the program, the participant may apply to the Board of Educational Examiners for a license. A state and federal background check is required. Local districts have the option of hiring individuals with the Substitute Authorization. It does not guarantee employment.

Kee High School Speech Team to host Dinner Theatre

The Kee High School Speech Team will be hosting its third annual Speech Dinner Theatre Saturday, March 7 at TJ Hunter's Banquet Hall in Lansing. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and speech performances will begin at 6:30 p.m., including improvisational acting, reader's theatre, ensemble acting, mime, radio and individual entertainment.
Tickets are available from any Speech Team member or from the Kee High School Office through March 2. Proceeds from the evening are used to pay for Speech Contest fees and awards distributed to Speech Team members.

Applications being accepted for Alumni Scholarship now offered under newly-named Allamakee Scholarship Fund

The year 2015 marks the 10th year for the alumni scholarship originally instituted by the former Allamakee Dollars for Scholars (ADFS) Board of Directors and now being continued by the newly-named Allamakee Scholarship Fund, Inc. after the group's more localized reorganizational efforts this past year. The award is made to a Waukon High School (WHS) graduate who participated in the former Allamakee Dollars for Scholars program while in high school and received an ADFS award as a graduating senior.

Waukon High School Music Department to host annual Pop's Concert February 28

The Waukon Music Departments will be hosting its fifth annual Pop’s Concert Saturday, February 28 at the Waukon Junior High School gymnasium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with concert time at 7:30 p.m.
The Pop’s Concert features high energy musical numbers from the 1950s through today. Most every musical group at the Waukon Junior High and High School participate in this concert including the jazz bands, bucket bands and all vocal groups in grades 7-12, and even an elementary vocal group. Costumes are included in most every number performed at the concert and some numbers are even choreographed.
"Our fifth annual ‘Night at The Pops’ Concert will feature some of our past favorites and many new familiar tunes for the community to enjoy,” commented Adrienne Gerst, Waukon Junior High and High School Vocal Director. “Our students have been working hard on learning the music and choreography, and they always look forward to performing this fun music for the community."
