Kee softball team battles closely but comes up short of the win column in initial week’s four-game schedule of road contests

The Kee softball team opened its 2019 campaign in an unfamiliar place, starting off the season without a win in its first four games, although coming within a couple opportunities and runs of a different fate in half those contests. The Lady Hawks opened the season with a 15-5 loss at Decorah in six innings Wednesday, May 22 after having that game postponed a day due to rainy weather. The Kee girls then suffered a 5-3 loss at Waukon Friday, May 24 in a game shortened to just five innings by an approaching storm before coming up shy in two games at the Jesup Tournament Saturday, May 25, falling to Class 2A second-rated North Linn by a 6-0 count before surrendering a 10-8 loss to Alburnett in another game shortened due to tournament time limitations.

Behind the strength of three relay championships and two other point-scoring individual finishes at the State Track and Field Meet held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Thursday-Saturday, May 16-18, the Kee girls not only won their first running event State Championships in program history, but used those three event titles - one each day - to further fuel their way to a share of their first-ever Class 1A Team State Championship, scoring 36 team points to tie with Alburnett for this year’s Class 1A crown.
