Moonlight Hike at Effigy Mounds this Saturday

Take a walk through musical history this Saturday, August 28 as Effigy Mounds National Monument presents the summer Moonlight Hike. Several local musicians will perform as participants hike along the Fire Point Loop Trail - the hike will take visitors up the bluff and back in time for an opportunity to listen to and learn about the music of historic America.

New Leo Club established in Waukon

A new Leo Club was established in Waukon when 14 charter members celebrated the organization of the new Waukon Leo Club with a charter banquet July 18. The Waukon Lions Club sponsored the new club for young people, ages 12-18.
Jordan Manning of Waukon was elected to serve as the club's first president. Courtney Wikan of Waukon will serve as the club's first secretary. The Waukon Leo Club plans to get involved with many community activities. Club members say they are excited to give back to their community.

Correction on New Albin Clerk sentencing

Magistrate Barry Mueller was incorrectly identified as the sentencing judge in the August 11 article in The Standard regarding former New Albin City Clerk Stephanie Ahles. While Mueller oversaw Ahles’ initial appearance in court, it was District Court Judge John Bauercamper who presided over Ahles’ sentencing and who denied her request for a deferred judgement. The Standard regrets this error and apologizes for any confusion or inconvenience it may have caused.

Seth Koch honored at Eagle Scout Court

Seth Koch of Boy Scout Troop 67 in Anamosa, formerly of Troop 64 in Waukon, was be honored at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor Sunday, August 15 at Anamosa United Methodist Church in Anamosa.
Koch began his scouting career as a Tiger Cub in Waukon Pack 64 in 1999. In 2000, he joined Pack 64 as a Cub Scout.  In May 2003, he earned the Arrow of Light, the highest Cub Scout Award, and joined Boy Scout Troop 64.

"We Remember Waterville" author to host area book signing events Aug. 16-17

Robin Larson, author of the new book, “We Remember Waterville” will be in the area signing and selling her books this month.
Monday, August 16, Larson will be available at the Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank Community Room in Waukon from 12:30 to 3 p.m., and then at Robey Memorial Library in Waukon from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 17, Larson will again be at the Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank Community Room in Waukon, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, and will then be at the Waterville Public Library from 3-6 p.m.

"Get Your Rear In Gear" 5K Run/Walk in Waukon set to raise colon cancer awareness

The Colon Cancer Coalition announces the first ”Get Your Rear in Gear” 5K Run and Walk, which will be held October 2 and begin at the St. Patrick School parking lot located at 200 Second Street SW in Waukon. The event will highlight the importance of screening for colon cancer, encouraging the public to take action and talk to their doctor about screening. The race serves as an important place to gather and celebrate colon cancer survivors, remember those lost to this disease and honor those who are still battling.

Jim Mathis honored to be running the Vet's Club, a long-time community icon

Jim Mathis of Waukon took over ownership of the Vet’s Club in Waukon March 15. “The Vet’s Club has been an icon in the community for many years and I am enthused to continue the tradition,” Mathis said.
Mathis has years of experience in the restaurant business. He worked at Clancy’s Supper Club in Lansing from 1985 to 1988 and from 1992 to 1993, and at The Cliff House in Decorah from 1993 to 1994. He was the head chef at the White House Supper Club from 1994 to 1998 and managed the Elk’s Club in Decorah from 2005 to 2008.
