Good Samaritan Society I-Ride Motorcycle Cruise July 17

The second annual I-Ride Motorcycle Cruise fundraiser is set for July 17. The motorcycle cruise raises money to benefit residents at Good Samaritan Society - Waukon, West Union and Postville. The centers plan to use the proceeds to remodel resident rooms to make them feel more like home.
Registration will be held from 9-10 a.m. at Good Samaritan Society-Waukon, located at 21 East Main Street. The registration fee includes a T-shirt, light breakfast, lunch and barbecue supper at the end of the cruise.

Mackenzie Lyons to perform July 20 with Celebration Iowa in Waukon

Celebration Iowa Singers and Jazz Band, an elite ensemble of Iowa high school musicians, announces upcoming performances in northeast Iowa. The ensemble will perform in Waukon Tuesday, July 20 at 7 p.m. at the Waukon High School, with tickets available in advance at discounted prices at all banks in Waukon and Lansing, and again in Decorah Friday, July 23, at 1 and 3 p.m., and Saturday, July 24, at 1 and 5 p.m., at 100 Claiborne Drive in conjunction with the annual Nordic Fest celebration. The show is organized by Nordic Fest, Inc. and there is no charge for admission.

Family Night set for July 12 kicks off Library's Summer Reading Program

"Make a Splash @ your Library" is the theme for the 2010 Summer Reading Program (SRP) at Robey Memorial Library in Waukon. SRP begins with Family Night Monday, July 12 from 5:45-7:30 p.m. Scheduled events include:
• Registration for four-week Reading Challenge
• Sand Art by Library staff
• Fur Cases of Allamakee County by Allamakee County Conservation Department
• Story telling by Sue Kiesau and puppet friends.
All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Area pair claims Little Miss Laura honors

Rylea Nagel (left) and Katelyn Leiran (right) claimed top honors in the Little Miss Laura contest Saturday, June 26 in conjunction with Laura Ingalls Wilder Days in Burr Oak. Nagel, the daughter of Craig and Shawn Nagel of Waukon, was named Little Miss Laura, and Leiran, the daughter of Steve and Nancy Leiran of Waterville, was named Little Miss Laura Alternate.

Veterans Memorial Hospital experiences first financial loss since September 2009

The month of May ended up with a grim financial showing for Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) in Waukon. The hospital ended up with a loss of $85,165, which Administrator Mike Myers explained was due in part to the facts that inpatient revenue was about $150,000 below what was expected, and outpatient revenue was “pretty flat” as well. Total expenses were also under budget by 3.4%.
