Maria Jose Zahn, age 61, of Conway, SC died Friday, October 2, 2009 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC. A graveside service was held Sunday, October 4 at Hillcrest Mausoleum in Conway, SC with Reverend Gene Wallace officiating.

Beverly Hitner, age 67, of Waukon died Friday, September 25, 2009 at Gundersen-Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI. Services were held Monday, September 28 at Hanson Funeral Home in Waukon, with burial in the Rossville Cemetery. Casketbearers were friends of the family.
Beverly was born April 7, 1942 in Monona to Fredrick and Sylvia (Sawvell) Huckstadt. She married Howard Hitner November 25, 1960 at the Lutheran Church in Waukon, and they made their home in Waukon. Beverly enjoyed gardening, sewing, crafts and reading.

Jamie Matthew Ryan, 33, of Ankeny died Friday, September 25, 2009 at his home. Visitation with family present will be from 10-11 a.m. Friday, October 2 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 109 Second Street SW in Waukon, with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11 a.m. Jamie has been cremated and a private burial of his cremated remains will take place at a later date. Visitation and Prayer Service were held Tuesday, September 29 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, Des Moines.

Charles E. Hawkins, 57, of Waukon died Thursday, September 24, 2009 at his home in rural Waukon after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 3 at 1 p.m., with family visitation from 12-1 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Pastor Deb Lynd-Schmitz officiating. Lunch will be served after the service at the church. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon is handling arrangements.

Lucille H. Troendle, 93, of Lansing died Saturday, September 26, 2009 at Thornton Manor Care Center in Lansing following a long illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 29 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in Gethsemane Cemetery, both in Lansing.
Lucille was born October 7, 1915 in New Hampton to Sam and Helen (Boos) Bechtel. She graduated from East High School in Waterloo. She married Cornelius Troendle May 26, 1942 in Lansing in a double wedding ceremony with Cornelius’s brother, Richard, and sister-in-law, Gladys.

Marian J. Nolting, 95, of Waukon died Friday, September 25, 2009 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 29 at 11 a.m. at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial was at Zalmona Cemetery.

Dominic Lee Horns, age 8, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2009. Funeral Services were held Friday, September 25 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. The Rev. Dave Lenth officiated. Burial will take place in Calmar Lutheran Cemetery, Calmar at a later date.

Merlin J. Nelson, 72, of Dorchester died peacefully at his home in Dorchester Tuesday, September 22, 2009. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, September 25 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Dorchester. Father Joseph Schneider officiated and burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dorchester.
Merlin was born August 19, 1937 in Caledonia, MN to Nels and Clara (Gran) Nelson. He graduated from Loretto High School in Caledonia and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He married Sheilah Kumpf November 16, 1963.

Dr. Carl Raymond Kruse, M.D., age 76, of Hannibal, MO and formerly of Palmyra, MO passed away September 20, 2009 at Luther Manor Nursing Home in Hannibal.
Carl was born June 26, 1933 in Hannibal, MO to Raymond Ernest Heinrich and Dorothy Emma Rothfuss Kruse. He was baptized July 9, 1933 and confirmed March 30, 1947, all at Immanuel Lutheran Church, West Ely, MO. Carl married Nancy Palmer April 10, 1960 in Gary, IN. She preceded him in death August 17, 1990. He married Helen Jean Smashey Gallaher June 13, 1992 in Palmyra, MO.

Carol J. Brewer, 73, of Waukon died Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. There was no service, as Carol chose to be cremated. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.
Carol Jean Brewer was born December 25, 1935 in Waukon, the daughter of Creighton and Gladys (Hanson) Bender. She grew up in Waterloo, where Carol worked as a caretaker for most of her life. She enjoyed clamming and hunting oysters in South Carolina.
