Don't forget about Canada... and don't forget about its agricultural prowess. Since 2001, federal, provincial and territorial governments have been working to help strengthen and revitalize its agriculture and agri-food industry. It has developed an Agricultural Policy Framework (APF), a platform that addresses five elements dealing with business risk management, food safety and quality, science and innovation, environment, and renewal. The government consulted with Canadian residents and incorporated their ideas into the policies.

On Feb. 14, 2005 the EPA proposed three regulatory options to maintain air quality in areas that meet national air quality standards for nitrogen dioxide (NO2).

1. To retain the existing increments NOx measured as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the ambient air as established in October 1988;

2. To allow states that choose to implement an interstate cap and trade program for sources of NOx to rely on the benefits of that program in place of the existing increments to prevent significant deterioration of NO2 air quality; or

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service announced the launch of a new website to inform stakeholders about the national animal identification system (NAIS). The Web site, available at www.usda.gov /nais, is designed to be a one-stop resource to facts about NAIS.

"We hope our stakeholders will visit the site frequently to find out the latest news about the NAIS from a national perspective," said APHIS Administrator W. Ron DeHaven. "It will be updated regularly as new information becomes available."

I thought your readership may appreciate an update on the Isle of Capri Casino originated Legacy Project, here in Clayton County, Iowa. Our local group’s battle to dismantle this corporate welfare scheme is now entering its fifth year. This government subsidized grand project’s only component that shows life today is the River Bluff Resort, LLC. This urban sprawl publicly financed resort-hotel/water park, country club-golf course, gated housing development which was to be built over three miles from any community infrastructure lies in limbo.

To most of the world, he was a star, a multi-millionaire, and the late-night talk show host with the boyish charm and a huge celebrity guest list. To many in my hometown of Norfolk, NE, he was just the local boy who never outgrew his Midwestern values.
