Beginning in the 2005-06 school year, Waukon Senior High students will be taking semester tests regardless of their grades and attendance, as Principal Dave Herold explained to the Allamakee Community School District's Board of Education during its Monday, Feb. 21 meeting.

The Memorial, which will be placed on the front lawn of the Allamakee County Courthouse Square, is intended to honor and recognize the service and sacrifice of all military veterans with ties to Allamakee County.

The initial phase of construction was completed last fall. The final details, including placement of the monument and the bricks honoring area veterans, will be completed when weather permits this spring. Dedication of the Memorial is scheduled for Sunday, May 29, the day prior to the Memorial Day festivities that take place every year in Waukon.

In his first district tournament appearance, Stephen swept the field to earn district championship rights at 189 pounds as well as the junior’s first trip to the state tournament. Stephen earned his state berth in dramatic fashion, scoring a 7-5 decision in overtime over seventh-rated Blake Suckow of Sumner-Fredricksburg. The championship is the first for the Tribe since 2000.

Thursday, Feb. 17, the top-rated Indians defeated visiting New Hampton by a 70-29 final in Region 6 quarterfinal action. Saturday, Feb. 19, Waukon traveled to Decorah to hand the 15th-rated Vikings a 54-23 loss. The pair of wins moves the Tribe into the regional final this Friday, Feb. 25 against Dubuque Wahlert.

Waukon still holds an unblemished 23-0 standing for the season.

Regional quarterfinal vs. New Hampton...

Of the Tribe’s three district competitors, Swart had the day’s best finish. The junior 189-pounder scored two straight wins to earn championship honors.

Swart opened the event with an 8-2 win over North Fayette’s Mike Moser. In the finals, the Indian wrestler faced a rematch with Sumner-Fredricksburg’s Blake Suckow. Suckow, ranked No. 7, had defeated Swart just a week earlier in sectional action. After three periods, the bout moved into overtime, where Swart scored a quick takedown and took the 7-5 victory.

at Central...

Although the Indians didn’t have a peak performance Tuesday, Feb. 15 at Central, the Tribe still hung on to take a 58-54 nonconference victory.

Central got on the board first and by the end of the first frame had taken a 15-11 advantage over the visiting Indians.

Waukon began to turn the contest around in the second quarter, outscoring the Warriors 18-11 through the next eight minutes to score a 29-26 lead by the half.

Andy Schon (Fr.) finished 9th in the 3000-meter run at the Feb. 18 UNI-Dome Open. His time was 9:06.22.

Christa Hammel (Fr., F) had 7 points, 6 boards, 3 blocks, and a steal Feb. 18 as the Upper Iowa Peacocks fell to South Dakota State, 97-55. Feb. 19, she led the team with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, and a steal and assist in a 78-42 loss to North Dakota State.

The Waukon Indian seventh grade traveling basketball team played at the Boscobel, Wis., tournament Saturday, Feb. 5. The team played against Iowa-Grant, Platteville, and Riverdale and finished as the champions of the eighth grade division. vs. Crestwood...

Four points were all that separated the Tribe from victory Jan. 13. Crestwood posted a 57-53 win over the Indians.

Nick Kruger scored a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Colin Egan ended with 12 points and four steals.

Marcus Tweedy reeled in nine rebounds while Ryan Anderson grabbed six.
