“Free” trip to state!

Dubuque Wahlert gave the Waukon girls basketball team its stiffest contest of the postseason last Friday, Feb. 25 at Oelwein High School. The Golden Eagles pushed the Indians late in the game before super free throw shooting by the Tribe clinched the 46-34 regional final win - and a second consecutive trip to the state tournament.

Swart finishes fifth at state

Swart’s drive to the podium began Wednesday, Feb. 23, with a 10-6 opening round decision over Algona sophomore Kyle Simonson. “The first match is one of the toughest to win probably because of nerves. It was the most anxious match Stephen had,” said Indian coach Greg Adams.

With a first round victory in tow, Swart had a day off before hitting the mat Thursday in the quarterfinals against fifth-rated Glenwood junior Ty Copsey. Copsey ultimately pinned Swart in just 1:04, sending the Indian into the consolation round.

Boys basketball Tribe ends year with back to back losses at Decorah

Waukon’s boys basketball squad made back to back trips to Decorah during their final week of action. Tuesday, Feb. 22, the Indians completed the regular season with a 63-51 loss on the Vikings’ home court. Less than a week later, Monday, Feb. 28, Decorah handed the Tribe a season ending 59-44 loss.

Waukon’s final record is 13-9, which included a 7-5 mark in the Northeast Iowa Conference, good enough to finish fourth in league action.

JV girls compile 16-4 record on hardcourt

Waukon’s junior varsity girls basketball squad just completed a fine season. The Indians registered a 16-4 record overall. They were 9-3 in Northeast Iowa Conference play.

Waukon team wins sportsmanship trophy...

A team of Waukon girls earned the fifth and sixth grade sportsmanship trophy at the Jan. 22-23 Prairie Catholic Schools basketball tournament. Sophomore boys basketball team ends year with 16-5 mark

The sophomore boys basketball squad rounded out the season with two wins in their final three contests. The Indians bashed Central 62-30 before falling to Charles City by a 57-41 final. Fortunately, the Indians recovered to win their final game, a 54-42 road win over Decorah.

For the year, Waukon was 16-5 overall and 9-3 in Northeast Iowa Conference play.

Freshman boys win three of four

Waukon’s freshman boys basketball squad pieced together a successful run near the end of the season. The Indians downed South Winn, Prairie du Chien, and Charles City before suffering an eight-point loss to Decorah.

Friday, Feb. 4, Waukon upended South Winn by a 54-48 final score.

Colin Egan led the Indians with 17 points, nine rebounds, and three steals.

Ryan Anderson finished with 12 points, five boards, and two steals.

Jacob Jannsen added a pair of steals in the win.

4th-6th grade girls can participate in Saturday night volleyball

The Waukon Park & Rec Department will be opening the Waukon Senior High gym for girls in grades four, five, and six to learn basic volleyball skills and play games beginning this Saturday, March 5. Open gyms will run from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. during March and April. The gym will be open March 12 only if Waukon’s varsity girls basketball team is not playing in the state tournament championship.

College Recap

Christa Hammel (Fr., F) had 7 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 blocks Feb. 22 as Upper Iowa handed Rockhurst a 63-62 loss.

Erica Langland (So., G) had 5 points, 2 steals, and a rebound Feb. 22 at Coe fell to Luther, 79-43, in IIAC quarterfinal action.

Seth Tweedy (Jr.) and the University of Iowa finished 10th at last weekend’s Big Ten Swimming Championships. Tweedy was 49th in the 200 free (1:43.13), 50th in the 100 free (47.82), and was 63rd in the 50 free in 21.78.

Orders now being taken for WHS sandals

The Waukon Senior High Booster Club is taking orders for WHS sandals. The thong-style sandals are $20 per pair and feature a “W” logo. Flyers are being sent home with students of the district, however parents and fans are encouraged to place orders as well. Orders, along with payment, must be made at the senior high office by this Friday, March 4. Orders are expected to arrive in May.
