Loras College Vice President for Academic Affairs Cheryl R. Jacobsen, Ph.D. has announced the names of 447 students who achieved Dean’s List status for the 2004 Fall semester. Those students from the local area included on the list are Kendrin E. McCormick, Harpers Ferry; Colbey L. Weimerslage, Lansing; Elizabeth J. Elsbernd, Postville; and Craig M. Decker, Waukon.

Four Waukon Senior High School alumni have earned the honor of being named to the Dean’s List at Luther College in Decorah for the fall semester of the 2004-2005 academic year.

Meghan Palmer, a Luther College junior from Decorah and the daughter of Merlin and Becky Gesing of Waukon, is majoring in nursing. She is a 2001 graduate of Waukon High School.

Sandra Peake, a Luther College senior from Decorah and the daughter of Charles and Meg Schaller of Waukon, is majoring in elementary education. She is a 1977 graduate of Waukon Senior High School.

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point conferred 550 mid-year graduates during the university's 2004 fall commencement services Dec. 19, 2004 at Quandt Fieldhouse.

Michael A. Wadsworth, son of Jim and Kathy Wadsworth of Waukon and a 2000 graduate of Waukon Senior High School was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry.

For the fourth year in a row, the U.S. Department of Education has awarded the Student Support Services (SSS) project at Luther College in Decorah supplemental funds under the "special set aside for grant aid." The college contributed matching funds to the grant to result in a total award of $49,424 that will be used to finance College Completion Challenges.

A pair of Waukon Senior High School alumni have been named to the academic Dean’s List during the 2004 fall semester at the University of Dubuque.

Andrew Olson, a 2001 WSH graduate and the son of Rev. Larry and Claudia Olson of Waukon, and Katie Sickels, a 2002 WSH graduate and the daughter of Gary and Bonnie Sickels of Postville, have received the distinction of being included on the Dean’s List.

Approximately 4,704 Iowa State University (ISU) students have been recognized for outstanding academic achievement by being named to the 2004 fall semester Dean's List. The current Dean's List is available online at: www.iastate.edu/~registrar/info/dlistbyname.pdf.

The following local students were among those to be honored with placement on the ISU Dean’s List:

A pair of Waukon Senior High School seniors, Christina L. Good of Dorchester and Morgan R. Lyons of Lansing, attended Mount Mercy College Scholarship Day January 15 and were each awarded a Holland Presidential Scholarship by Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids.

Students invited to Scholarship Day are distinguished academically. They have a high school grade point average at or above 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or an ACT composite score of 26 or higher. They also have strong records of extracurricular involvement and community service.

One approach to confronting this problem was presented by guest Joan Fumetti, representing Foods Resource Bank (FRB).

Rev. Fumetti explained that FRB was formed in 1999 and the model has great appeal to people in rural areas who wish to reach out to the hungry in a very tangible way. Foods Resource Bank is a Christian, non-denominational, non-governmental humanitarian agency. It is committed to helping people in developing countries feed themselves through sustainable, small-scale agricultural production.

The tradition of weekly ecumenical Lenten Breakfasts continues next week at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. The breakfasts begin at 6:45 a.m., serving coffee, juice and rolls, with the program starting at 7 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend each week.

The men gather each Monday during the Lenten season and the women meet each Thursday for the breakfast events. Locations will be rotated between area churches each week, according to the remaining schedule below:
