Helen A. Zarwell, 91, of New Albin, Iowa, passed away Thursday afternoon, February 24, 2005, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis., following a brief illness. Funeral services were Monday, February 28, at St. Peter’s with burial at the New Albin City Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Rose K. Schulte, 87, of Waukon, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Northgate Care Center, Waukon. Funeral services were held Friday, February 25 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Waukon, with Fr. Joe Schneider officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Hanson’s Funeral Home, Waukon, was in charge of arrangements.

Rose Kathryn was born August 30, 1917, in Waukon, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Nellie (Quillin) Hancock.

On May 10, 1938, she was united in marriage to Vincent Schulte at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lycurgus.

Rose M. Kelly, 79, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at St. Francis Hospital, La Crosse, Wis. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 19 at St. Ann’s-St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Harpers Ferry, with Fr. Louis Trzil officiating. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery - Paint Rock. Hanson’s Funeral Home of Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Rose Marie was born August 6, 1925, in a log cabin in rural Wexford to Jesse and Lillian (Boardman) Mohn. She attended high school in Harpers Ferry.

Ethel L. Johnson, 89, of Waukon, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 26 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Rev. Steve Campbell officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Milton I. Iverson, 82, of Waukon, died Saturday, February 26, 2005, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 1 at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, with Rev. David Andreae officiating. Burial was in the Iowa River Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Lucille Helen Ayers, 90, of Yakima, Wash., entered into the arms of Jesus Friday, February 4, 2005, at Landmark Care Center surrounded by her loving family. A celebration of life was held Saturday, February 12 at the Nile Valley Community Church. Memorials may be made to Flying H Youth Ranch, c/o Keith and Keith Funeral Home.

Lucille Helen was born in Beach, N.D., on June 28, 1914, to J.W. and Lizetta (Wild) Snow of French Creek. She was proud to be an Iowa girl and graduated from high school in Preston, Minn., in 1932.

Andree S. Burrett, 82, of Waukon, died Sunday, February 27, 2005, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 3 at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Ione Stangeland, 100, of Newark, Ill., formerly of Wedron, died Wednesday, evening, February 16, 2005, at the LaSalle County Nursing Home. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 19, at the Fox River Lutheran Church with Pastor Kevin Garner officiating. Burial was in DeBolt Cemetery. Arrangements were by Gabel-Dunn Funeral Home, Ltd., in Sheridan.

If you’ve tried several times to quit smoking and failed, you may think it’s time to give up. Not true. Most Americans make four to eight tries before they finally succeed.

With knowledge of the health risks associated with tobacco, the prevalence of smoking declined steadily among nearly all age groups and income levels during the second half of the last century. From 1993 to the present, however, the number of smokers has remained fairly constant at about 25 percent of the population, suggesting that those who found it relatively easy to quit may have already done so.

As if having arthritis weren’t bad enough, those who have it are more vulnerable to stress, depression, anger, and anxiety due to pain, loss of functional ability, and social contacts. According to the National Health Interview Survey, arthritis affects almost one out of every six Americans. Arthritis affects people of all ages, but is more common as you get older.

Although arthritis usually doesn't go away, its symptoms can be treated successfully.
