School’s back in session for tobacco retailers, as area clerks will receive state training on selling tobacco.

In coordination with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division (ABD), the Waukon Police Department will teach a tobacco compliance training class Thursday, March 3 from 12 to 2 p.m. Training will be held at the Robey Memorial Library located at 401 First Avenue NW in Waukon. Registration is exclusively available via the Iowa ABD’s website at www.IowaABD.com.

During the Feb. 21 meeting of the Allamakee Community School District Board of Education, an informational presentation was given on the removal of the high school's current semester test option. The decision to require semester exams for all students was reached by a committee of high school faculty members and reported to the board as an informational item only.

No official decision has been made, however, plans are that all students will be required to take semester tests beginning in the first semester of the 2005/2006 year.

Members of the Waukon Indian girls basketball team celebrate after earning a second consecutive trip to the Iowa High School Girls Basketball State Tournament with a 46-34 triumph over Dubuque Wahlert at Oelwein Friday, Feb. 25 in the Class 3A Region 6 championship. The win allows the Indians to return to Des Moines with another unblemished regular season record that has now run its way to 24-0 through postseason play.

Over $1.4 million was raised in that campaign, allowing the hospital to make all of its needed improvements in comfort for the patients and the physical facility. Hundreds of volunteers from the area communities took part in this campaign, making it the beautiful, accessible facility it is today.

The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Waukon will be held Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m. All the usual activities involving food, music and fun are expected to again take place following the parade.

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Tuesday, Feb. 22. The council’s regular Monday session was delayed due to the President's Day holiday. The council held two public hearings, one concerning the proposed plans, specifications, and form of contract and cost estimates for the 11th Avenue SW Street Improvement Project, and the other concerning an amendment to the current fiscal 2005 city budget. There were no objections to either and the council continued with both items.

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its annual banquet Saturday, April 9 at the Waukon Reception and Banquet Center. Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner being served at 7 p.m. and the evening’s program set to begin at 8 p.m. One of the highlights of the evening will be the announcement of Waukon’s “Person of the Year”.

Circus coming to Lansing March 7
The Jose Cole Circus will be coming to Lansing Monday, March 7. The performance will take place at the Eastern Allamakee Community School District Middle School beginning at 7 p.m. This 30th anniversary edition performance is being sponsored by the Lansing Lions Club.
Tickets may be purchased in advance until March 5 at the following locations: New Albin Savings Bank, Moore’s Foods in Lansing, The Red Geranium, Touch of Class Beauty Shop, and Welsh’s Village Farm and Home.

After an early-season injury to one of her senior teammates, Tiffany stepped into the Tribe’s starting lineup. She’s been a vital part of the top-rated Indians’ success ever since.

So far during Waukon’s three-game postseason run, the junior forward has grabbed 31 rebounds, including a pair of 13-board efforts against Decorah and Dubuque Wahlert. For the season, Tiffany has a team-leading 160 rebounds to her name.

Offensively, she’s one of five Indians to top 100 points this season. Her 158 points are fourth best for the team.
