The Waukon City Council passed a resolution at its Monday, Feb. 7 regular meeting to establish a policy on snow removal from public sidewalks within the city limits. Effective immediately, the resolution reads as follows:

Disabled American Veterans meeting in Decorah Feb. 16
The Disabled American Veterans Hamre-Giesen Chapter #8 holds monthly meetings at the All Vets Club in Decorah, beginning at 11 a.m. The meeting for February will be held Wednesday, Feb. 16.
Attending meetings will give disabled veterans and their families updates on available benefits. Anyone wishing to attend the meetings but unable to secure transportation may contact Commander Erik Nykannen at (563)535-5430 or erikn@acegroup.cc.

Waukon’s grapplers hit the mat Saturday, Feb. 12 for their first postseason action of the year, traveling to New Hampton for the sectional tournament. Waukon finished sixth in the team standings with 113.5 points and a trio of athletes finished second to advance to this Saturday’s district tournament at Upper Iowa University. New Hampton claimed the top spot in the team standings with 243.5 points.

Northeast Iowa is blessed with trout streams. These are the small spring fed streams that have water temperatures cold enough to keep trout alive in the summer months. The water temperature coming out of these springs is generally at 50 degrees. And even after this water flows through miles of stream the water temperature rarely gets above 75 degrees.

One of the things on my “to do” list for this week is to write up an annual tree planting plan. At Yellow River Forest, we generally plant about ten acres per year to native trees from the State Forest Nursery in Ames. We prefer to plant mixtures of oak with other upland hardwoods. Occasionally, we mix red and white pines in our hardwoods to act as “trainers” for the hardwood trees and help capture open field sites sooner. We also plant an abundance of shrubs that will provide quick dense cover and food for many species of wildlife until the trees get going.

Harry C. Sander, 83, long time resident of Waukon, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005 in Houston, Texas. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 9 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Services in Houston were held February 5 at Brookside Funeral Home, Cypress Creek Chapel. Martin Funeral Home handled local arrangements.

E. Max Van Gorp died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon at the age of 83 years. Memorial services were held Saturday, February 12, at Fjelstul Funeral Home, Decorah, with Rev. Anita Bane officiating. Inurement was in Freeport Cemetery, Freeport, Iowa. Full military honors were by Helof-Holm VFW Post No. 1977, Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163, and D.A.V. Hamre-Giesen Chapter No. 8.

Curtis M. Huffman, age 77, of New Hampton, Iowa, died Monday, February 7, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center, New Hampton, of natural causes. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, February 10 at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center, New Hampton, with Msgr. Carl Schmitt celebrating the mass. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home, New Hampton, was in charge of arrangements.
