DAIRY PROMOTION AWARD

named outstanding dairy promoter was Nancy Wonderlich.

Nancy was not born a dairy farmer; in fact, she grew up in San Antonio, TExas. She attended Iowa State University to obtain a degree in animal science. At ISU she competed in a milking contest, and her coach became her future husband. Little did she know that she would be doing this the rest of her life.

The couple's first farm was in Southeast Iowa. They milked 70 holsteins and raised crops in partnership with her husband's father.

GIBBS ARE A PART OF A GROWING TREND IN NORTHEAST IOWA

"I didn't like using chemicals on our land," stated John Gibbs when asked why he chose to become an organic farmer. "We were just trying to do what God wants us to do."

John, along with his wife Janet, daughter Jenny and son Jim, run a certified organic farming operation about three miles southwest of New Albin where they raise red and black angus cattle. They own 685 acres of land, with 190 acres of it being tillable, making it well suited for beef cattle production.

Organic farming in recent years has become very popular, especially in the Coulee region.

BROTHER LEO SAILS TO HISTORIC FIJI ISLANDS; PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AS CANNIBAL ISLANDS

Just the name “Fiji” conjures up image of a Pacific Paradise. We were to be at sea five days between the magenta coral lagoons of Bora Bora and our floral encased “islands of love”, Tahiti and Fiji. However, we entered Fijian waters long before we reached Viti Levu, the cigar shaped main island and Suva, the capital of Fiji.
