MOTORCYCLE CRASH CLAIMS LIFE OF NEW ALBIN RESIDENT

James Alan Darling, New Albin, was killed June 7, sometime after midnight, due to injuries incurred while operating a motorcycle 1.2 miles west of Hwy. 26 near New Albin.
Injured was Darling’s passenger, Janet Dias, New Albin. The woman was transported to La Crosse Lutheran Hospital, La Crosse, WI, and initially filed in critical condition with multiple internal injuries. According to a June 13 conversation with hospital emergency staff, Dias currently remains in serious condition.

ALLAMAKEE COMMUNITY SCHOOLS PRESENT HONOR ROLLS

Honor Roll for
East Elementary

      East Elementary School has released the honor roll for the second semester. For the "A" Honor Roll a student must achieve a 3.8 or higher on a 4.0 scale. To make the "B" Honor Roll a student must achieve between 3.0 and 3.79 on a 4.0 scale. If a student has made the "E" Honor Roll, or Exceptional Effort Honor Roll, the student increased by a letter grade in one academic course without dropping in any other academic course between the third and fourth quarter.

OLD HARPERS LANDMARK BACK IN BUSINESS

The little old building at 323 Chestnut in Harpers Ferry, known for years as T.W. Melavan, is once again bustling with activity, thanks to its new owners, Connie Thorstenson and Donald Orth. Connie and Donald, both Harpers Ferry residents, were looking for a building to showcase Connie's talent as a handcrafter of artificial wedding flowers and various other items.
Connie's mother, Maggie Kleinschmidt, worked at T.W. Melaven for a time, and also helps out at her gift shop. “I remember, as a little girl, buying penny candy at the store. Little, as in ‘itty-bitty,’ Connie said.

Golden anniversary reception planned

Virgil and Betty Johanningmeier will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on June 24,
Friends and family are invited to attend an Open House at Scenic Ridgeview Dance Barn from 2-8 pm. There will be a reception followed by a dance with music by the New Buckaroos.
The event will be hosted by Sandy and Shane. No further invitation is being sent.

An open house for the Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg and Sister Margaret Anne Kramer will be held Sunday, June 18, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Waukon Fairgrounds Pavilion.
The open house is being sponsored by St. Patrick’s and St. Mary’s Lycurgus parishes.
Entertainment will be provided by the Toe Tappers.

Lanny and Joyce Marting of Postville wish to announce the engagement of their daughter, Renee, to Brandon Kostman, son of Raymond and Kara Kostman of Hershey, NB.
Renee is attending Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Watertown, WI, and is majoring in church ministries with a concentration in office administration and an emphasis in women’s ministries.
Brandon is a graduate of Doane College in Crete, NB, with majors in German and Spanish. He is planning to teach history and foreign language at the high school level.

FREE LEGAL CONSULTATION TO BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR FARMERS JUNE 20

An attorney from the Legal Services Corporation of Iowa Farm Project will be available on Tuesday, June 20, at two locations to meet with farmers to provide a free legal consultation. The LSCI Farm Project provides free legal services to financially eligible farmers in their farm debt problems, disputes with creditors, business contract matters, protection of homesteads and other agricultural legal matters.

PASTURE WALK TO BE HOSTED BY AREA FARMER

The NE Iowa graziers will host the third pasture walk of the season at the Kevin Amundson farm near Clermont on June 21 at 12:30 p.m. Kevin is grazing stocker cattle on pastures of alfalfa, clover, ryegrass and orchard. Pushing water up 140 feet to the top of the farm will be demonstrated.
To arrive at the farm from Iowa Highway 18 in Clermont, go northwest on Stone St. (south side of the Valley Coop) for .3 mile, then right on Crystal Rd. .9 mile.
