HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM UP AS MEMORIAL DAY SPEAKERS; THOSE ATTENDING ADVISED TO RESPECT DEDICATED MILITARY SERVICE

Those who attended Memorial Day ceremonies at Waukon's Oakland Cemetery Monday morning, May 29, were treated to a rare, perhaps unprecedented, “double” in the form of husband and wife speakers, Bill and Kathy Campbell.
Bill, veteran of over 25 years as a local law enforcement officer, and also a veteran of the war in Vietnam over 30 years ago, talked about some personal aspects of that war.

CITY COUNCIL EXAMINES FLOOD DAMAGE AND STREET REPAIRS

Water seemed to be the main topic of discussion and business at the Waukon City Council meeting Monday evening.
Dan Schlitter, representing the Waukon Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), asked the Council to consider a grant application for sewer and water to loop the city with the newly created industrial park. The state grant assumes financial burden for 60 percent of the $550,000 to $600,000 project. Schlitter explained that the application was due in two weeks and cited the city's chances of receiving the grant as favorable.

MADAME LIBRARIAN: ROBEY LIBRARIAN RETIRES AFTER 15 YEARS IN CURRENT POSITION

Katrinka Sieber assumed her position as Robey Memorial librarian in 1985, when the facility was still housed in the Old City Hall.
“It was a very scary thought, moving a whole library,” said Sieber of the library’s 1985 move immediately following her employment to its current location at 401 1st Ave. N.W.
Sieber, due to retire the end of June, has served 15 years as librarian in Waukon and been instrumental to the new library's continued growth over the years.

INDIAN BASEBALL TEAM TRYING TO FIND RIGHT MIX, STILL SEEKING FIRST VICTORY OF SEASON

The Waukon Indian baseball team is still in search of its first win of the season, remaining winless in a total of five games, including four contests within a 24-hour period this past weekend. Back-to-back nights of baseball for the Tribe, Tuesday, May 30 at Turkey Valley and Wednesday, May 31 at home against Central Elkader, were both claimed by rain this past week, being postponed until later this season.

INDIAN SOFTBALL TEAM'S 4-1 START UNDER NEW HEAD COACH INCLUDES SWEEP AT CHARLES CITY TOURNEY

The initial venture into coaching high school softball for first-year Waukon Indian head softball coach Jim Mauss got off to a very encouraging start this past week. Coach Mauss and his Indian field charges have gotten their young season off to a 4-1 start so far, including three victories at the Charles City Tournament this past weekend.

JOSH TWEEDY SELECTED TO RUN IN IATC SENIOR SPOTLIGHT MEET

Waukon Indian graduated senior Josh Tweedy has been selected as a member of the Iowa All-Stars who will compete in the Iowa Association of Track Coaches’ Senior Spotlight Track and Field Meet this Saturday, June 10 at Loras College in Dubuque. Tweedy will be competing in the 4x800 relay for the Iowa team, combining his talents with those of fellow seniors Mitch Anderson of Mount Pleasant, D.J. Schnenk of Monticello, and Justin Schlicker of Ankeny in that relay event.

SAINT MARY'S OF HANOVER TO CELEBRATE BOTH FIRST MASS AND GOLDEN JUBILEE

June 3, 2000, will be a special day for two families and the parishioners of Saint Mary's church in Hanover.
On June 3, 1950, a native son of Hanover, Maurice O. Gallagher, son of Maurice F. and Estella Gallagher, was ordained to the priesthood. This year he will celebrate his Golden Jubilee, fifty years of ministering to the spiritual and material needs of his parishioners. Also on that day, he will retire from active ministry.
