INDIAN TRACK BOYS IMPROVE SOME PERFORMANCES AND STATE MEET STANDINGS AT LAST CHANCE MEET

A number of members of the Waukon Indian boys track team competed in the Cedar Rapids Last Chance qualification meet held at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids Tuesday, May 16. The mission of those Indian competitors, and those competing from the other 42 teams represented at the meet, was simple - put forth their best performance of the season in an attempt to get qualified for the upcoming state track meet. May 16 was the final day for establishing a state-qualifying performance for high school boys in Classes 2A, 3A and 4A.

Clarine Schutte

Clarine Henrietta (Olson) Schutte, 67, of Castalia, died May 13, 2000, at her summer home in Park Rapids, MN. Funeral services were held May 17 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Postville under the direction of Rev. Robert Hupp. Joan Martins was the organist, with special music by Lynette Wilson.

RACHEL REISER FINISHES 8TH IN CLASS 2A STATE MEET 3000 METERS, BETTERS OWN SCHOOL RECORD ONCE AGAIN

Waukon Indian girls track senior Rachel Reiser brought her high school track career to a successful close this past weekend by finishing eighth in the Class 2A 3000 meter run at the Iowa High School Girls State Track Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Friday, May 19. After a career of sprinting and hurdling that began in junior high and continued through her junior season, Reiser made the switch to distance running this season, finding her niche in the world of track and field.

VALEDICTORIAN, SALUTATORIAN ADDRESS GRADUATING CLASS OF 2000 DURING COMMENCEMENTS

Commencement exercises for the graduating Class of 2000 were held Sunday, May 21, in the Waukon Senior High gymnasium. Class colors represented at the ceremony were burgundy and navy with silver accents, while the class flower was a moonlight rose. Students chose the following motto in remembrance of their years together: “Make yesterday today’s memories. New beginnings call for sad endings, but the friends left behind will never be forgotten. Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave and impossible to forget.”

SCHOLARLY CRUISE TAKES BROTHER LEO TO MYSTERIOUS EASTER ISLAND

We sailed from Punta Arenas on schedule. Rather than plunge directly into the Pacific, however, the captain decided to sail the first day along the coast of Chile so we could experience the Chilean fjords.
For years, I thought all the fjords were in Norway, but in later years, experienced the fjords of Yugoslavia and now those of Chile, set off by the snow capped Andes in the background.

VOCAL MUSIC CAREER ENDS IN RETIREMENT

As junior high and elementary students rush from the doors of school Thursday, May 25, not only will they bid farewell to another successful year in the chain of education, but to a teacher that has been a part of that process for over 27 years. Tom Searcy, vocal instructor at the Junior High and East Elementary, will retire following these few final days with his students.

FIVE CANDIDATES VIE TO FILL THREE COUNTY POSITIONS

As brightly-lettered yard signs and campaign flyers indicate, the June 6 primary is fast approaching. This year, five candidates seek to fill a total of three positions in county government; only four will continue on to the November election.

INDIAN BOYS GOLF TEAM WRAPS UP SEASON WITH THIRD-PLACE FINISH AT NEIC TOURNAMENT

The 2000 Waukon Indian boys golf season came to an end Tuesday, May 16, as the Tribe competed in its final outing of the season, the Northeast Iowa Conference meet at Charles City. After finishing the year with an even, 3-3 mark in dual meets against the six other NEIC teams, the Tribe finished a bit better than that in tournament action against those same teams, claiming third at the conference affair with a team score of 331 strokes.

Jeremiah Rush

Jeremiah Christopher Rush, infant son of Don and Tinna (Duvall) Rush, was born and died on Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at Fairview Riverside Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. Services were held May 20 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon with Larry Snitker officiating. Burial was in Rossville Cemetery.

BRAND NEW INDIAN BASEBALL TEAM HAS PLENTY OF QUESTIONS TO ANSWER FOR 2000

The initial Waukon Indian baseball season of the new millennium would best be described as a "work-in-progress" for veteran head coach Paul Norton and his 2000 Indian diamond charges. After back-to-back appearances in the Class 3A State Baseball Tournament in Carroll, this year's team doesn't return a single varsity starter from last year's squad, making for an uncertain early part of the high school baseball season for the Tribe.
