BASIL JACK LIBBEY

Basil “Buzz” J. Libbey Sr., 67, of Lansing, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at his home due to heart failure. Memorial services were held Saturday, May 27, at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. The Reverend Lynn Groe officiated. In lieu of flowers, a memorial was established in Basil’s honor.

LA VERN PLEIN

La Vern Plein, 80, of Waukon, passed away May 25, 2000, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon.
La Vern was born Dec. 1, 1919, the daughter of Anton and Alvaretta (Whalen) O'Donnell of Waukon. She graduated from high school May 25, 1936, then attended La Crosse Teachers College in La Crosse, WI.
July 7, 1948, La Vern O'Donnell was united in marriage to James Plein at St. Mary's Lycurgus, a rural church midway between Waukon and Lansing.

BROTHER LEO SAILS IN THE STEPS OF MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY CREW; TRAVELS TO HISTORIC PITCAIRN ISLAND

Who has not heard of the famous Mutiny on the Bounty? To have heard the story of the Mutiny is to have heard about Pitcairn Island. Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, another native Iowan from Colfax, both of whom lived in Tahiti, wrote what has become the “Bounty Trilogy.” The mutiny on the Bounty was a historical fact. Acting Lt. Fletcher Christian led a mutiny against William Bley, Captain of the HMS Bounty, on April 28, 1789.

WSH BAND AND VOCAL STUDENTS AWARDED FOR ACHIEVEMENTS BEYOND CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

The annual Waukon Senior High Music Department Awards potluck was held Tuesday, May 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium. The event was originally scheduled for May 25; however, when the date conflict with the state track meet became apparent, the music department rescheduled the ceremony.
The evening was highlighted by the music of Power Jazz, the WSH Jazz Band, delicious food and, most importantly, recognition of the ambitious and hard-working young musicians in the band and vocal programs. Speech and colorguard awards were also presented.

4X800 WINS CLASS 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!! INDIANS CLOSE TO PLACING IN OTHER EVENTS AT STATE MEET

The 2000 Memorial Day weekend will include an extra special, solid gold memory for Waukon veteran track coach Harlan Heidelbauer and his Indian boys 4x800 relay team.
The Indian 4x800 foursome of seniors Eddie Frick, Kirk Deal and Josh Tweedy, and junior Cody Kammeyer struck state championship gold at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Saturday, May 27, winning the Class 3A 4x800 relay state title in a time of 7:55.37.

County and state primary elections will be held Tuesday, June 6. Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. Polling sites are as follows:

FOUR VIE FOR ALLAMAKEE DAIRY PRINCESS TITLE

The 36th annual Allamakee County Dairy Days banquet will be held Thursday, June 1, 7:30 p.m., in the Waukon Senior High gymnasium. Competing for the 2000 county dairy princess title are Allamakee residents Angie Gibbs, Rachel Reiser, Erin Schulte and Renee Schulte. Crowning this year’s royalty will be current County and State Dairy Princess Tiffany Einck. Brief biographies of the young women competing for the position are as follows:

LOCAL SAVINGS BANK CELEBRATES 75 YEARS IN ALLAMAKEE COUNTY

Farmers & Merchants Savings Bank met its beginnings 75 years ago in the bustling community of Waterville.
With bank failures common throughout the nation and the closing of the Farmers and Merchants State Bank of Waterville in 1924, a group of progressive citizens provided the work and $25,000 in capital to organize Farmers & Merchants Savings Bank in 1925 to enable the town access to localized banking services once again.

BASEBALL INDIANS BEGIN SEASON WITH 5-1 LOSS AT NORTH FAYETTE; SHOOKY FINK TOURNEY POSTPONED

The 2000 Waukon Indian baseball season got off to a rather unsuccessful start this past week. With several members of this year's varsity-inexperienced club unable to compete in the Tribe's first game for various reasons, the Indians were handed a 5-1 loss by North Fayette at West Union Tuesday, May 23. The Indians were also scheduled to compete in Kee High's Shooky Fink Tournament in Lansing and New Albin this past Saturday, May 27, but the rainy weather forced postponement of the annual event until this Saturday, June 3.

INDIAN SOFTBALL TEAM HAS MUCH RETURNING, BUT ALSO HAS SOME NEW FACES IN KEY PLACES FOR 2000

The 2000 Waukon Indian softball team will return nearly its entire squad from last season, but there are also several new faces in key places for the Tribe diamond dwellers this year. Most notably, Jim Mauss takes over the head coaching duties of this year's club, and his first task will be to fill the two holes in the Indian line-up left vacant by graduation last year.
