Donald J. Murphy, 44, of Ely, died May 16, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, following an accident at work for the City of Cedar Rapids. Funeral services were held May 19 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Waukon under the direction of Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg. Burial with graveside military rites was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.

Elizabeth (Betty) Burke, 74, passed away in her home May 10, 2000, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Betty was born in rural Allamakee County to Joe and Julia (Blake) Mauss on Dec. 4, 1926. She attended country schools and graduated from St. Patrick's in Waukon in 1945. Betty taught for several years in the rural Allamakee schools of Clear Creek and French Creek.

Robert J. (Bob) Gallagher, 63, of Marietta, Georgia, died April 17, 2000 after a sudden illness.
Funeral sevices were held April 24 at Transfiguration Catholic Church, Marietta. Fr. Patrick Bishop, Fr. Joseph Morris and Fr. Rafael Castano officiated. Burial was in Kennesau Memorial Park Cemetery, Marietta.
Bob was born Jan. 3, 1937, in Chicago, IL. He married Jean (Martindale) Tobin on July 7, 1978, at St. Patrick's Church, St. Charles, IL. He was employed by IBM.
Bob was preceeded in death by his parents.

Eight members of the Waukon Indian boys track team have qualified in seven events for the 2000 Iowa High School Boys State Track Meet to be held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines this Friday and Saturday, May 26 and 27. The Indians turned in one of the top 24 performances in Class 3A in each event this season to earn qualification in the seven events. The events, the Indian competitors who qualified, and the times they are scheduled to compete in the events at the State Meet are listed below.

Michael “Tower” Justin Wieczorek, 19, of Decorah, decided to leave this world on May 9 in Iowa City, where he had been in attendance at the University of Iowa.
A memorial service was held at the Whalen cabin in Phelps Park, Decorah, on May 14. Many of his friends and family gathered to share their sorrow and pray that Michael has found peace. A funeral and burial were held in New Brighton, MN, on May 15. A memorial service was held in Iowa City on May 12 at the site of his death for those grieving there.

Ella A. Aschim, 75, of Waukon, died May 20, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held May 23 at Frankville Presbyterian Church in Frankville with Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial was in the Frankville Cemetery.

Upon the closure of Monday evening's regularly scheduled Allamakee Community School District Board of Education meeting, the board received the tendered resignation of Senior High Principal Patrick Heiderscheit. At this point, the board has taken no action concerning Mr. Heiderscheit's resignation, and information pending his action will be released at a later date.
Also present at the meeting and speaking in behalf of Tim Mitchell, recently resigned Senior High vocal instructor, was Vickie Larson, community resident.

Supervisors have been busy in past weeks with discussion ranging from a final approval of contracts and bonds for projects totaling over $900,000 to the proposed hiring of a new central point coordinator.
Initiating a recent meeting, however, was a request by some 50 residents near Harpers Ferry asking that the county implement a "no wake" zone, beginning at a point just south of Noble's Island and continuing south the extent of Cottage Road.

After nearly an entire day of deliberation in Allamakee County District Court, Matthew S. McMillan, 29, of Waukon, was sentenced Monday, May 8, to a maximum 20-year prison term.
Specifically, McMillan was adjudged guilty of two counts of assault on a peace officer while displaying a dangerous weapon and two counts of interference with official acts while displaying a dangerous weapon, both listed as class "D" felonies.

Monday night's Waukon City Council meeting met with little controversy and was highlighted by the approval of a series of resolutions pertaining to upcoming street improvement projects throughout the city.
The meeting was opened with a public hearing on proposed amendments to the FY 1999-2000 city budget. Changes would reflect the receipt of two grants to Robey Memorial Library, the first for $5,000 from the Gelatt Foundation, the second for $817 from an Enrich Iowa grant, used to purchase computer equipment at the site.
