The Waukon Chamber of Commerce is offering a reward for information leading to the identification of the person(s) who vandalized the Waukon sign located on Highway 9, west of Waukon. Lissa Blake, Director of the Waukon Chamber, said her office was notified of the vandalism last week.
Brian Bodensteiner of Bodensteiner Body Werks in Waukon immediately tried to remove the paint, but said the sign would ultimately need to be redone. He estimated the damage at approximately $1,000.

Jury selection in the murder trial of Christopher Craig Thompson of rural Monona was scheduled to get underway Tuesday, November 8 at the Allamakee County Courthouse and possibly continue into Wednesday, November 9. The trial itself is expected to last between one and two weeks.

Starting December 1, the rural dumpster program in Allamakee County will see changes. The rural contracts for waste haulers have a duration of five years, with a new contract beginning December 1 of this year. With recessionary times and county budgets shrinking, the move to a more cost-effective system for the future will be put into place.

The Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation’s Christmas Fantasy 2011 will be held Friday through Monday, November 11-14 at the Allamakee Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon. This year's theme will be “It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas.” A complete list of events scheduled for the Christmas Fantasy can be found on Page 2A inside this week's Standard.

Elections for city officials and consideration of some public measures will take place in local communities throughout Allamakee County Tuesday, November 8. Polling sites in Lansing will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m., with polls in Waukon, Harpers Ferry, New Albin and Waterville open from 12 Noon to 8 p.m. that day for community residents to vote at their respective polling sites. Those sites, along with sample ballots and other election information, can be found on Page 10B in last week’s (October 26) print edition of The Standard.
