Patsy Kerndt of Lansing was inducted into the 2011 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair Sunday, August 21.
Eighty-eight Iowa counties participated this year and have selected 121 inductees for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. Inductees or their surviving family members were presented with a certificate by the Iowa 4-H Foundation as they are introduced on stage.

Plans are underway for a 2011 Northeast Iowa Patriot Day celebration being held at the Waukon City Park in honor of the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. The event is being planned for Sunday, September 11 at 1 p.m. and will include the honoring of area service men and women who will be returning or have returned from service since the attacks.

Lansing’s Black Hawk Bridge “...will last a long time,” said Department of Transportation (DOT) District 2 Design Engineer, Mark Callahan. Except for the approximately 12-inch crack in a steel support beam and despite rumors to the contrary, Callahan said the bridge is in excellent shape. The flaw will be repaired by affixing steel reinforcement slabs on each side of the beam. The repair is not considered major and should be completed by Friday of this week at an estimated cost of approximately $25,000.

The Black Hawk Bridge, located at the intersection of Iowa Highway 26 and Wisconsin Highway 82 in Lansing, will be closed until further notice following a Wednesday, August 17 inspection. Upon inspection of the bridge's piers and supporting structure, a crack was discovered under the bridge deck, resulting in an immediate closure of the bridge.

The S&D Café has been a fixture in downtown Waukon for over 80 years, serving up breakfast, lunch and many memories for its patrons. Recently, owner Sandy Halverson was given a unique piece of  S&D memorabilia by the daughters of the Simons, the “S” in S&D.

Allamakee Community School District's junior high and high school students were issued laptop computers over the past week as the District's 1:1 Initiative gets underway for the upcoming school year. Junior high students were each issued a Dell "netbook" computer (top photo at right) and high school students were issued more powerful Dell laptop computers (bottom photo at right).
Waukon Junior High Principal Joe Griffith said that the computers would transform teaching and learning in the District, allowing kids to become "creators and producers."
