Obituaries are published in The Standard for a $45 fee and can be brought to the office at 15 First Street NW in Waukon, mailed to PO Box 286, Waukon IA 52172, or e-mailed to news@waukonstandard.com. Photos may be included for an additional charge of $15 (additonal photos are also $15). Obituaries of excessive length (longer than our single-column length of 15.5") will also incur an additional charge of $11/column inch for the content measuring longer than our 15.5-inch column length. John Shaw

John Shaw

John M. Shaw, 94, of Waterloo died Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, April 19 at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church in Waterloo. Burial was at the Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Cedar Falls with Military Rites by the Cedar Falls Amvets Post #49 and Iowa Army National Guard Honors.

John was born December 12, 1921 in Hopeville, the son of Boyd Milton and Sarah Grace Jackson Shaw. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College High School in Cedar Falls in 1939.

John married Donna Kathleen Carroll June 6, 1941 in Waterloo. She preceded him in death November 20, 1985. He then married Elizabeth Ilene Mulder October 11, 1986 in Waterloo. She preceded him in death September 17, 2003.

James De Long

James De Long

James Leland De Long, age 71, of Trempealeau, WI, formerly of Stoddard, WI, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Holmen, WI Monday, April 18, with Father John Parr officiating. Following Jim’s wishes, he has been cremated and the burial will take place at a later date at Gethsemane Cemetery in Lansing.

Jim was born in Allamakee County July 20, 1944 to Leland and Theadora (Ferring) De Long. He was joined in marriage to Linda Kastroll May 25, 1968 at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, CA.

Marlys J. Jacobs, 78, of Waukon died Friday, April 15, 2016 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 19 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Dr. Bruce "Doc" Baxter

Dr. Bruce "Doc" Baxter

Dr. Bruce E. “Doc” Baxter, 83, died Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at his home in Van Horne, following a sudden illness. Memorial Services and Flag Presentation were held Monday, April 11 at Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone with Rev. Kevin Fiedler officiating. Private Family Interment was at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Primghar. A memorial fund has been established.

Bruce was born July 31, 1932 in Battle Creek to Gordon and Lula (Evans) Baxter and graduated from Archer High School in 1950. Bruce served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War on the Battleship U.S.S. Wiltsie. Following his discharge in 1955, Bruce attended Iowa State University and graduated from the Iowa State School of Veterinary Science.

He married Veronica Lakers and had four daughters, Denise, Cindy,  Kathy and Laura. Later, he married Julie Erb and they had a daughter,  Jessica.

Howard Ingles

Howard Ingles

Howard Edward Ingles, age 84, died April 4, 2016 from natural causes in Stockton, CA. He is buried in the VA Cemetery in Dixon, CA.

Howard was born to George and Mildred (Lamphere) May 20, 1932 in Lansing. He served in the U.S. Army 7th Infantry during the Korean War.

Howard was united in marriage to Veronica Duffy September 24, 1955. Three children were born to this union: David, Donald and Joseph (deceased). Howard worked as an autobody repairman and was also Clubmaster for Troop 65 in San Carlos, CA.

Howard is survived by his wife, Veronica; two sons, David (JoAnne) Ingles and Donald Ingles; a grandson, Aaron (Angela) Ingles of California; and two sisters, Donna Trappe of Monona and Adeline Hammel of McGregor.

He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph; his parents, George and Mildred; three sisters, Luella, Pearl and Agnes; and four brothers, Arthur, Ernie, Henry and Raymond Ingles.

Lyle Westby

Lyle Westby

Lyle N. Westby, 78, of Waukon died Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Memorial services were held Monday, April 11 at Glenwood Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, with Pastor Stacey Nalean-Carlson officiating.

Lyle Nash Westby was born October 18, 1937 in Waukon, the son of Carl and Rachel (Nash) Westby. He was baptized and confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, and he graduated from Decorah High School in 1955.

June 14, 1959, he married Jackie Chambers in Waterloo. Lyle worked for Carlson Construction in Decorah and at John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo. He and Jackie started farming in 1964 in Glenwood Township, rural Decorah before moving to a farm in Jefferson Township, rural Waukon in 1970.

Ruth Ellen Burke, 67, of Lansing died Friday, January 22, 2016 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home in Lansing.  Monsignor Ed Lechtenberg will be the celebrant.
Visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m., prior to services, Saturday, April 9 at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home in Lansing. Inurnment will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in New Albin following the services.

Marion Smith

Marion Jean Smith (nee McCoy), 81, died in Eagle Grove Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016. The Funeral Mass was offered by her son, Fr. Scott Archer, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove Thursday, March 31, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove.
Marion was born December 3, 1934 in Des Moines, the daughter of the late Carl H. McCoy and the late Bessie H. McCoy (nee Burgin). She grew up in Des Moines and graduated from high school in 1952. She was employed as a secretary for Northwestern Bell in Des Moines from 1952 until 1956.

Roland Grotegut

Roland Grotegut

Roland “Rollie” Frederick Grotegut, age 87, of Decorah died Saturday, March 26, 2016 at his home in Decorah. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 30 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser presiding. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Rollie Grotegut was born January 18, 1929, the son of Simon and Lydia (Rolfs) Grotegut in rural Waukon. Rollie was baptized at Salem United Church of Christ and attended there the first eight years of his life. The family moved closer to Waukon and he became a member of Zion United Church of Christ, where he was confirmed April 18, 1943 and remains a member today.
Rollie attended school in the Waukon area. At a very early age, Rollie started working for several local farmers; from 1951 to 1974 he worked the family farm, one and a half miles west of Waukon. After that he worked as a yard man for 18 years at the Northeast Iowa Sales Commission, near Waukon, retiring in 1992.

Anita Goebel

Anita A. Goebel, 92, of La Crosse, WI died Thursday, March 31, 2016 at the Bethany St. Joseph Care Center in La Crosse, WI. A Prayer Service for family and friends was held Tuesday, April 5 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Anita was born May 19, 1923 in Waukon to Albert and Anna Marie (Hermanson) Goebel. She had worked at the Tosa Club in La Crosse, WI for many years. She was a gifted poet and enjoyed stitching and creating her own fiber artistry. Anita was very intelligent with a great sense of humor and positive attitude. She is survived by several cousins and a special friend, Patricia Mattie.
